Hi gang,

This one has been long due,
Courtesy of www.mariner-sails.com, I had the opportunity to test and review the Old Town Predator PDL

Personally I think this kayak is the best bang for your buck as far as pedal kayaks go.
here's why:

Make sure to stop by Mariner's demo day this Saturday and take one out for yourself!!

Good review!

I agree. I sort of think the Predator PDL took care of some issues that plague the Native Propel 13, and leap-frogged ahead in the 13 footer pedal space. And, it is such a muscular kayak with its really great lines . . . so it really stands out in its appearance, too. Harley Davidson "cares" about looks and "sounds" so why not kayaks?

I was surprised to find out that Old Town has no provisions for self-servicing the drive unit. I do like the idea that Minn Kota engineers were likely engaged in designing the unit with their long history with trolling motors, but it likely means you need to be near a dealer to get the unit serviced; then, too, the expenses related to that. But, I get it, and if the drive unit is really sophisticated, buyers will just have to treat it like they would an automobile where for some things, they have to go in for service.

I may be wrong, but that is why I would be a little skeptical about putting down the amount of money they ask for these new kayaks, where it seems they treat any service after the sale as an afterthought, and I guess leave it up to the dealers, who even they would give you a funny look if you asked about service on the unit.
I just haven't heard of what people have done when issues comes up?
It seems that most only keep their kayak for a year or two anyway and then upgrade!
Anything mechanical is eventually going to fail, but the kayaker using a paddle will usually wear out before the paddle does.
That's just my observations though!

That PDL looks pretty dang nice. But why does it only have a 500lb. limit and the MX is 600lbs.?

Makes me want to buy the MX and later on buy the peddle drive. But that is some real $$$ for a kayak.

The opening for the drive init takes away from its buoyancy. That said 500 lbs is a very large weight capacity.
