Over 200k on my 5.9 Cummings and no real repairs to speak of. An alternator last week ($126 my cost)and replaced ball joints. My nephew is on his 2nd 6.7 Cummings truck and has had almost no problems. He did have the DPF go out at 110k on his first one and did a delete on it, which greatly increased his fuel mileage and performance.

I don't buy into the whole "fuel costs more" argument. Does it? I pay a bit more up front but get way better mileage than a gasser - loaded and unloaded. Seems like a wash until I pull my boat with my gas truck and only get 12-13mpg or less.(depends on what lake I'm going to)

If I was purchasing to pull a travel trailer, there is no way I would buy a gas truck.

Some simple facts. They do not make 5.9 cummins or 7.3 powerstrokes, or emission free 6.6 duramaxes any more and haven't for some time, unless he is looking for a well used high mileage truck its not even worth discussing.

The 6.7 you nephew has... the DPF fix is a several thousand dollar fix, deleting it isn't much less unless you do it yourself which most people do not have the skills to do. Also plain and simple deleting one is against the law and you commit a crime selling a deleted vehicle and dealers will not buy them. Just all around a short sighted fix.

And in all honesty the fuel mileage is not night and day. You don't get 20 mpg driving a diesel however you want to, if you drive them both similarly they will both surprise you, I know a lot of people who only get 13-14 mpg out of a diesel empty.

I just picked up a used 2013 2500 Ram with the 6.7 Cummins in it. I plan to Delete the emissions, however right now I am averaging 17mpg...that is what my 1/2 ton was also averaging. I can't wait to see the mileage after the delete. Diesel is definitely more $$ up front. I just got tired of pulling a 21' bass boat and only getting 10-12 mpg. Me and the wife also plan to get a camper in the near future.

If you want a diesel look at this website. www.powerstrokehelp.com they have tons of info on any model ford you could want. If you have the budget and time call him up and have him do his dealer proof to it or even a bullet proof. Id go with a 2005-2008 f250 powerstroke. Get the work done that truck will go 700k miles with you doing regular maintenance.

Got a F250 , 99 , 7.3 and 2017 Denali Duramax-Alison 2500. My opinion diesel all the way .Buy the R.V. you want and the boat you want , you will never look back .

I tow a 19' boat, albeit a very heavy (charger) 19' boat. My gas 1/2 ton towed it OK, meaning i would get there and back, but it was stressful towing - motor would downshift and crank up the RPMs on every slight grade, and acceleration was horrible. And i would get 11mpg tops while towing. But it did the job. did i 'need' a diesel - heck no. But towing with it as compared to the gas truck is a much improved experience.

Have a buddy that just bought a 6.7l PS and was complaining he only got 16mpg on the interstate. Told him it was better than the 12mpg I got in my 6.0l. The Cummins seems to get the better economy out of the 2. Not sure about the GM.

Economy aside, I'd rather have the diesel and a good warranty, just for the power.

Thanks for all the input. After a lot of looking around found what I wanted at Texas Motorcars in Addison. Brian made me a deal, gave me a good price on my trade in and was in and out in just a couple hours. Thanks Brian; love the truck. Got a F250 diesel crew cab.

excellent choice, you'll never end up on a long steep grade wishing you had a diesel.

What year model/engine did you get?

Sorry, haven't been on the forum lately. Got a 2013 F150 with the 6.7. Happy with the performance so far; gas mileage isn't what I would like. But power and cruising can't beat it. I had a perception of diesels as being sluggish and lumbering. This truck is neither, fast and surprisingly nimble and easy to drive. I got the old man truck, an XL so no back up camera or navigation. I will add a camera and I have navigation on the phone. Also need to get running boards. Wife has a hard time getting in it. Got the long bed and four door so I pick my parking spots carefully. I hear these trucks have an oil monitoring system that will alert you its time to change the oil. If anybody has one of these tell me where to access that information. I found out about the DEF and added some. Texas Motor Cars and Brian did me a good deal I think and didn't take all day doing it. We both think it was the easiest car buying experience we have ever had. And we have bought a few cars.

Had them both, would only buy diesel in the future.

Wanted to post back with an update to this post. Got the F250 diesel and towed a 33ft travel trailer this weekend up 35W to Isle Du Boise state park. Best towing experience ever. Even in the stop and go traffic and tight lanes through the construction. No dipping up and down over dips and bumps in the construction zones thanks to the hitch on the trailer and the F250 suspension. Very happy towing experience. Computer generated MPG with trailer was 12.5 not great but not bad.

Glad you're happy with it. For towing a big travel trailer, it's hard to beat a 3/4 ton diesel. They're expensive and not much fun for daily driving, but they are towing beasts.
