I might make 2 cast but other then that, I will talk and help/coach the kids to improve. Help there thinking process. During the last tourney, my student had fished an area real good. So I decided to pick up a shaky head and dang if I didn't catch a 3lbder. I hated myself all day. I can go fish any day, they can't.
Thanks,

I do fish quite a bit. As some have stated above, sometimes they just need a confidence boost or to refocus. Often times I am doing something opposite of them. If they are fishing slow, I will throw a moving bait or vice versa. I am constantly trying to figure out if there is something else going on that we would not have found other wise. I never set the hook and I can normally shake off 90% of slow bites. If I'm fishing a moving bait and get bit, then I will have one of them start throwing that bait.
Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

This is my second year to captain for Mt. Pleasant....last year I entered the side pot and fished every tournament except for the Regional and State tournaments where we weren't allowed. This year I've entered but haven't really fished alot............my take on the captains fishing is that it should be allowed in EVERY tournament all the way thru state. I've noticed that not only does the captain being able to fish aid the kids in colors and techniques, it also keeps them excited and fishing. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up a rod this year, caught a fish and (refocused) them. In my opinion, it helps!!! Exactly, it does not hurt a thing being able to fish and demonstrate better, A polygraph is given so don't see the big deal. I agree, as long as the boat captain is focused on helping the team. As we all know, the fish may knock slack in the line one day, then the next day you never feel them bite. That's an opportunity to show the team that the fish are still there, and what to focus on. We miss that opportunity to teach by not being able to cast. I've captained about three of these now and absolutely enjoy it. I'm working on the coast but keep my boat in the Tyler area. So my 5-6 hour drive to come captain is also my opportunity to fish. The last time my boat was in the water was Pines, and the last time before that was Fork, both THSBA tournaments. My guys had the fish on to win Fork, and lost a 5 and broke one off pushing 10 on Pines, probably would have had 1st or 2nd there. I don't think they would have had those fish on if I hadn't been fishing, seeing what the fish were doing, and showing them. Just my two cents, but I'd like to fish all events with my team. Not being able to pre fish Palestine is going to make it tough without being able to fish during the day Saturday. My guys are due for a win though, it will just be a little tougher for them.

This is my second year as a boat captain (Denton). I don't fish during these tournaments for several reasons, but I like that boat captains are allowed to fish in the qualifiers. The scholarship money it provides is nice.
Headed to Palestine, tomorrow, for another day of practice. Hopefully, I won't chew up another prop.

That's a shame. Hopefully THSBA will use this as an example to teach ethics, and consequences for bad decisions.
