I have never had one "wear" out. I have had a few get water in them but that was over 20 years ago.

Because manufacturers have the option people just jumped on the band wagon believing that it would be a deciding factor on how much longer the life expectancy of the unit was. Really means nothing. Some units last forever and some may not make it a year. Like Wayne pointed out, was the 500 hours used over hundreds of short trips or a few long ones. When I go fishing, I'm usually there for 12 hours or more

Agreed. It's electronic. Hiw long will a television last? Usually years. I would think it would have more to do with consitions on water & if its left on the boat while trailering (vibration & jarring) more than hours of use. I put mine on & remove mine from boat after every use. They're riding in a padded case when. not being used. Granted , an in dash mount stays in boat but they dont get shaken like a removable arm/bracket mounted unit.

My two Helix 12s live in Pelican cases when they are not in use. $200 is cheap protection/insurance for $3000 worth of electronics.
