So i made some recent purchases and beefed up my selection of ul gear. I got an abu garcia pro max 5 spinning reel and paired it with a 7ft medium light allstar panfish rod. I got a chance to use the setup monday night, and i was not disappointed. The rod is pretty sensitive, the reel is butter smooth and casts like a dream. Might have to get one or two more like this before summer gets here.

Coc Angler, your selections sound like very smart choices!
If you add to your panfish gear, what I'd do, did do actually, is then add a short combination next, something in the 5 feet rod length range. I now have a 6'9" and a 5'0" rod.
I need another reel but I have been switching a 1000 series Shimano Ci4+ back and forth for now.
So, I like my 6'9" rod for long casts, the 5 footer for fishing out of my kayak, shooting docks and short work. A short rod is also easy to throw in the trunk or backseat of your car, often best for fishing along wooded creeks, lake edges, under bridges or anywhere there are tight conditions.
Hey! Give us more info as you use this set-up, especially on the reel!

Brad, I thought I was the only one who fished in his back seat. So far I have caught a bag of Cheetos dated 2012, 3 empty Clamato cans, my wife's missing keys and my son's backpack. I switched to an open faced spinning reel because the baitcaster was bunching up. Cheers, JP

Brad Looks like you got a nice rig Coc Angler. Plus #1 on what Brad R is saying about a 5' rod. That is basically all I use for sunfish and pan fish. Love that Ultra Light fight.

I actually have a couple of 5'6 gander mountain vortex rods. They are a gem at only $19.99. I never did a review of them, but i have used them time and time again and they are great rods. they have a moderate action which has served me well both with live bait and jigs. i paired them up with mitchell 310 reels and spooled up with 6lb hi vis (either suffix or vicious) mono. Crappie, sunfish, and even the occasional channel cat have fallen victim to this setup. did battle with a grass carp over 20lbs, and the setup handled it well (except for the line lol)

i have some trips planned out to lake fork later this year, where I will look to do battle with some truly trophy size bluegill (got my pb there a few years ago just a hair under 11 inches and over a pound) and maybe tag a few crappie as well. These UL will serve me fine for those excursions.

Great! At first, it seems . . . counterintuitive, but a short and moderate rod means that under pressure from a fighting fish, its lifting point is much closer to your forward hand. The shorter the distance, the better (less worse) leverage you have. Odd, too, that I and everyone I know looks at the rather slim tips of small rods and we think, "Hmm! That looks fragile!" But, a rod that is flexed well down the blank is "straight" at its tip as it has passed along the tension to a point much thicker in the rod. It's as if a baton hand-off has occurred down the rod as pressures have risen. In the attached photo, it shows a rod under very heavy pressure from a large fish. The tip? It is straight for several feet. If the rod snaps, it won't be up at the tip unless it has a flaw in it. A second point here: with the bend in the rod, the lever length is effectively shortened and the more it bends by pressure from the fish, the more there is an offset owing to leverage math. If that rod flexed much higher, the angler would have a much bigger fight. Brad

Just wanted to give an update on my ultralight equipment: I am thoroughly impressed and pleased with the performance of the reels and rods. They are sensitive and allowed me to feel the slightest nudge. The 7 foot all star panfish Rod, is unbelievably light and sensitive. Going to post some pictures tomorrow of the damage I have been doing with these rods. I did make the switch over to 6 pound floral carbon to see if it made a difference with how fast I was bit. It definitely did.
