anyone know where the best location for camping/kayaking along the brazos river is? Im located in dallas tx and looking to take the trip next month... looking for clear water like the videos i see on you tube, good fishing and a good/clean/safe/friendly campsite that allows drinking lol

There are a couple of camping sites between Whitney and Waco that are furnished by TPWD. I've not been to them, don't know about drinking, but here's the information on them: http://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/rivers/lease_access/

Below Whitney you can only camp at the north location and access is from the river only. The south entrance is a good spot to put in. I have put in at the south one and paddled upstream a few times and had a good time. You can camp along the river in a few spots. There is another spot that you can camp and launch that is nice Spivey RV park I believe.
Or you can put in at Possum Kingdom at the Hwy 16 bridge. Just a mile down river are several great camping spots. Either way keep an eye on the weather and water release sites before you go. Have fun!

Water releases from Lake Whitney Dam are unpredictable and the COE will not tell you in advance when they will release. So camping above the normal high water line is probably the way to go. It would not be fun to be camped on a sandbar and have the river come up on you in the night. I don't know if you can get info on PK releases or not.

For current conditions (no pun intended) you can check out the river gauges, this one is at the FM2114 bridge about 8 river miles below Whitney. You can move up or downstream to other gauges a bit lower on the page. http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=FWD&gage=AQLT2

I don't believe PK dam ill forecast water releases, but they do have a Facebook page that might help. Its called Brazos River Authority and sometimes they post stuff about the dam gates opening and closing (for Granbury also). that dam doesn't generate electricity so its releases are all about keeping the PK lake at the right level. If the water flow is low and it hasn't rained recently, then its unlikely they will start dumping water. If the lake is full, which it usually is, and they just got 2" of rain west of there.......very good chance they will start releasing.

Below Whitney at the gauge near Aquilla a good flow for fishing is 7' or less. More than that and it gets pretty fast. On average, here lately, it's been going up to 12', starting about 5pm at the 2114 bridge, which means they probably started releasing around noon or so.

But that is for about half the day, the other half it drops down to 7' or less.

If you look at the gauge it looks like a pattern, which it is, until it isn't. I wish we could get the release info from the Corps, but they just won't share it.

Go below PK from hwy 16 to Rochelles at hwy 4. It's 19 miles with good fishing and plenty of camping spots on the river. Unless storms are in the area or for some weird reason it's pretty consistent on the flow which is nice when camping on the river. You can get a shuttle ride from Rochelles.

Below Whitney they release whenever power is need so it's unpredictable and it can go from 80 cubic feet per second to 5000 cubic feet per second in about 30 minutes. That means your nice river side camping spot can go from a few feet above water to several feet under in just minutes.

Rochelles is a good way to go. They have the 19 mile trip from hwy 16 down to their location or a 10 mile trip from their location down to another road, where they will drop your truck off at a designated time. I have used their shuttle service multiple times. Good fishing spots either way. You can also put in at Rochelles and paddle up a few miles and camp. For the 19 mile, I like to put in on a friday morning and take out mid day sunday. Gives you more time to fish instead of having to paddle to to keep up with time. Good luck.
