I had to go to Leakey, TX today for work. Leakey is about mid-way from Lost Maples and Garner State Park, and since I went to to Lost Maples a few years ago with my wife, I decided to check out Garner.

The first glimpse of water always gets my blood pumping.

The original plan was to fish for a couple of hours, then head back home. Of course, when the fishing is good I tend to lose track of time.

I changed lures several times throughout the day...black Roostertail, gold Mepps, blank and yellow Panther Martin, it didn't really matter what I was throwing, as long as I was throwing the sunfish were biting.

I fished a solid five hours and walked at least four miles (round trip) of river, and as I was pulling my waders off a park volunteer (nice guy named Walter) stopped to chat me up. After a few minutes he casually mentioned that they had stocked a bunch of rainbow trout last week, maybe a few hundred yards downstream from where I finally called it quits. bang That would have been awesome information to have when I paid to get into the park, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Too bad work isn't going to take me back that way any time soon...

Not that I'm complaining...as much as I love to catch trout I still had a great day in the outdoors.

Thanks Chuck! You know, if I were a man of leisure, I think I'd find a way to get back there next week after the Easter traffic is gone.

According to the volunteer I talked to it should die down after this weekend until Memorial Day. If you have some time next week you might want to give them a call, just to see what's what. You may wind up with an April trout!

How was the river flow? Also did you get a chance to see or cross the Nueces. If so how did that river look? noidea

River flow was good. They had a lot of rain earlier today, but by the time I got there the water was clear as could be. Didn't cross the Nueces. I was driving from Boerne, so I took the scenic route through Bandera and Vanderpool. Crossed the Medina and Sabinal rivers, wanted to stop at both but didn't have the time. Ranch road 337 from Vanderpool to Leakey is a beautiful drive! The temp on the mountain top was a good 10 degrees cooler than lower elevations. I've already promised to take my wife there this fall.

Great post and some cool pictures. Love photo #6 the best. Texas has some super clear water rivers.

#6 and #9 were my favorites. The rivers I fished growing up in east Texas were muddy and dark, I still can't get over how clear the waters are in central and west Texas.

Thanks Laker One. I fished from the Persimmon Hill area down to the beginning of Rio Frio. If there are any trout left they'll probably be holding from the southern part of Rio Frio to Oakmont.

Thanks J-Moe! I'd make at least a day of it if you have the time. I was only able to spare about 5 hours.
