Have a friend that got a new Ultrex just before Christmas. He has fished Squaw and Rayburn in 20-30mph winds and I we fished together in his boat at Lake Dardenelle in Arkansas for a college tournament 2 weeks ago and the wind blew harder than ive seen it in a long time and we turned the spot-lock on while fighting a fish and netting it and we never got more than 5ft away from where we turned it on. It adjusted speeds, turned, etc. to keep us around the spot. His works great and has no issue with spot-lock. His actually is better on his batteries than his old TM. I plan on buying one when I get enough money saved up because he has had such a good experience and I love the steering assist. Feels nice being as tall as I am.

This. You may be blaming the wrong device. If your GPS is sending the Ultrex inaccurate information, the Ultrex may be trying to correct for a non-existent movement.

Talons down on the water. Unit would go into search mode with head swinging 170 degrees either to the R or L and then shut down within 5 seconds. Unit might stay in anchor mode for 10-30 seconds, never longer. Talked with 2 different M K tech support agents. Described how it was acting and both immediately blamed it on low voltage. Dual Interstate batteries, 6 months old, never sit more than 8 hours till charged. Tested with 10 sec x 130 amp load, tested good. With fully charged (25.6 volts with float charge) Ultrex would not stay in anchor mode sitting on trailer. Spent 30 minutes with one tech attempting to show how the trouble shooting described was illogical. At no time did agents describe how the unit works, see below. Gave up and returned unit for full refund.
Second unit will not work with Fortrex mount, so had to install the Ultrex mount with the 4 alignment holes. Watched U tube video of a earlier version of the iPilot. Had one person in group who use earlier version and both said theirs worked differently. The second unit works but with serious constraints. 1. It anchors if going directly into the wind (probably current also). Say wind is from 180 degrees, it will lock with heading between 170-190 degrees. 2. It will not anchor sitting in driveway or with both Talons down and boat not moving. Within 10-30 seconds it goes into search mode with head swinging 170 degrees to R or L and then shuts anchor mode off. 3. It will not stay anchored with any side force, such as a boat wake from the side. 4. It will not stay anchored with swirling winds such as near trees in a cove. 5. It will not anchor if moves more than 2 feet forward after anchor function is turned on, contrary to the earlier versions it will not back track to get on spot.
Tech support was told most of this and never mentioned was unit going directly into wind and dead still. IMHO or not so H, the 2 tech support agents I talked to do not know the product.
Asked Minn Kota to put me in touch with project engineer or manager. Its been a week, no response.
As with 12 ft Talons the customers do the field testing. Have not tried the other functions with second unit, main use is dead still in water deeper than 10 ft where Talons dont work. With Talons one can go into full stealth mode, electronics off or on standby, no noise, often yields multiple LMB from one set (spot). The 12 ft Talons after 2 were updated or replaced by MK are working great. Hopefully a software update with changes to the spot algorithm will make the Ultrex a bit easier to use. With lower back issues, I like the power steering feature.

This might be a duplicate post, the first attempt disappeared in review mode.

I love my Ultrex, no problems whatsoever. Even in a 20 mph wind it holds me well within 6' radius of where I spot-locked. Sounds to me like you skipped some steps during installation as you never mentioned if you calibrated the motor to the heading sensor or not. If you are running an external transducer, the cable can also turn off the spot lock by prohibiting the head from turning if the cable is doesn't have enough slack. When I first hit spot lock, the head will turn quite a bit until it gets back to the spot but then settles down.

Agree with your experience, Talons are great (best shallow water anchor choice for stealth fishing) but useless in deep water, by design. Earlier models of spotlock work differently than what the Ultrex have done, fished past 2 weeks with anglers who have earlier versions.

I read your original post and was trying to suggest checking the voltage at the TM. Sorry if I was not clear.
20 ft of old wire and /or poor connections will render strong batteries useless. Testing at the batteries is great but I want to check them where the load is.
Most commercial battery tests recommend 1/3 of amp rating. 390 is not a very strong battery.

For this same reason spot lock does not hold a boat perfectly still on a spot. Even if there is zero wind it will search for an exact coordinate. The old spot lick would keep a boat wishing 15 foot of the spot the new one in around 8 foot.
There in not any way a trolling motor or any motor can hold perfectly still on a coordinate.
This.

Where is your heading sensor mounted? I have read several people with your issue and if you read the manual the sensor is suppose to be mounted at least 3ft away from the trolling motor so the magnets in the trolling motor do no interfere with the signal. For a lot of people it is not an issue (yet) but from what the reps are saying it will happen eventually.

Is your Ultrex a 112V 52" shaft? If so and you're interested in selling, I'll take it.

At Cabela's today he had four. The 80lbs24v and one 112/36(link) 52" shaft. Just throwing it out there if anyone is looking.

Did you do the steps to link your heading sensor puck to the TM?
Where is your sensor mounted?

Mine has never done what you're describing, hopefully you didnt get a defective TM somehow

I had to send mine back this week. It would be working great then nothing. It wouldn't work with foot pedal, remote or spot lock. I had to raise it up out of the water and let it fall back down and it would start working again. Now waiting for Minn Kota to ship me another one but they said it will be 1-2 weeks because they are still back ordered.
