The little 5 footer, ultralight, moderate action (St. Croix PFS50ULM) came in while I was in Houston and I picked it up today on the way home. The first thing I did was run down to the dock and give it a brief workout. Around 3 PM, I caught 2 bluegills after just a few casts. It feels great, casting accuracy is very high though much shorter than the 6'9" ultralight rod I have been using. I can imagine this short job will be a "go to" rod for kayak panfishing where I can slide right up tight to boat docks, bridge pilings and cover . . . and make short accurate casts.

Tonight, it started slow at around 7 PM, but then it turned on and I caught several nice bluegills, one around 9", one small LMB, and one keeper size crappie while I was visiting with the Nelsons.

Yes! I found my camera, and I am charging it up and plan to snap some photos to share. One of the two largest, not the 9 incher, had a really bright orange-red belly and was a real beauty. The crappie was darkly speckled and also a great looking fish.

Lake Athens is a very healthy sort of lake with all of the springs feeding it, lots of grass so really great water, a pretty good population of shad and all sorts of varmints. So, I know there is a big bluegill 11 incher out there, maybe a 12 incher!

This new rod could be the tool that will help me find out.

Brad

Nice report! You should really enjoy the shorter UL rod while fishing for the sunfish! You will get a super fight on a lot of fish. Wait until you hook onto a MONSTER carp or MONSTER bass! boxing
