Has anyone fished or stayed in Xcalak Mexico. Thinking of taking a trip down there for some fishing!

I peeked and see that it is only 7 miles from Belize. Why not just go to Belize? There are very limited places and how to get to them that are considered safe.... especially for Americans, either Anglos (Gringos) or Mexican Americans. My Compadres (my son's in laws) are from Mexico and 1 they will no longer drive down, 2 no longer visit most areas. They will risk flying into Guadalajara and sneaking to the Village MIL was from. It is not a matter of Gringos boycotting Mexico but Mexicans boycotting Mexico... or hurting our business because Mexicans are afraid to travel here to shop... but some charter flights and fly in to shop. Times have changed and your mileage may vary. Tio Pick

I'd search: Bill Kiene's forum: http://www.kiene.com/forums/

Alternatively, you can FB Jay Murakoshi or Bill Kiene... I'm sure they could point ya' in the right direction...

Yep, been there, several times, and done that. Xcalak is a wonderful place...if you like to get away from the crowds, the tourists, and experience Mexico like it really is...not like Cancun tourist traps and some of Belize.

It is a little "sporting" to DIY and much better off, at least the first time, to use an outfitter...especially for that drive down from Cancun airport.

Chetumal Bay is just a great fishing destination, especially for Permit but also has large numbers of bones and good numbers of Tarpon and the occasional eye popping snook.

Only downside to me has been the "discovery" of the area by the cruise ships...and nothing good seems to come from a cruise ship, as far as fishing goes.

This is almost completely not true if you're talking about QR, Baja, Oaxaca, the Yucatan, Mexico City, etc. My wife travels Mexico with her other female colleagues and we just spent some time on a small island frequented by Mexican tourists. Not a single concern. Northern Mexico on the other hand is different.

If you're planning a trip, the state department issues warnings that are worth reading - https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/mexico-travel-warning.html

Thanks so much, I have been to Belize several times and I'm looking for some advice from someone who has been there and fished!

Guess it depends on where you draw the line for Northern Mexico. Earler this week a couple from McAllen was driving back to the US in Reynosa and had their Suburban strafed by a Mexican Marine's Chopper. They were mistaken for a Suburban that had been involved in a running gun battle. They were both injured but managed to get back across and get medical help.

We do still have Transmigatories. The Mexican Gov allows people to cross Mexico with goods to take to El Salvador, Nicg. etc. They can only cross near me at the Los Indios bridge and must follow a prescribed route. They have always been subject to Morditas but I do not know how they are dealing with the Cartels.

My friend who lived in the Baja for many years would beg to differ on your inclusion of it and we have heard some negative things about Oxaca as well. I had intended to spend much of my retired time just kicking around rural Mexico. No Mas

You can also have trouble driving through Los Angles so maybe southern Mexico is more like that.
