You should be able to find a 12 foot pescador for the price if you keep an eye out. I've bought 3 of them from academy at that price. You just have to be patient.

The Heritage Featherlite Angler 9.5 is $269 at Academy and is a decent budget kayak.

You need to factor in your weight and the weight of any gear versus the stated weight capacity of the kayak. Total weight should not exceed about 70% of the weight capacity, otherwise performance will suffer and there are diminished safety factors. So if you plus your gear are 250 lbs, don't get a kayak with a 300 lb weight capacity.

Plenty of used kayaks and deals here, at craigslist, and other Texas kayak web sites. Factor in cost of a paddle and PFD, too. Save your money and get something that fits your needs.

I bought the featherlite used for 200. Has worked for me several times already.

I just sold an Old Town vapor 10 ( my 1st kayak) for $250 so I bet there will be some deals after the spring if you keep your eyes open.

There's nothing wrong with a $300 budget for your first kayak. Be patient and you'll find a deal. In the meantime, you can save a few more dollars while you wait.

But to answer your question, you will probably find that fishing from a $300 kayak beats bank fishing. I love bank fishing and still do it occasionally but a kayak will give you a lot more fishing options. Do it!

I say go for it! First kayak I bought was a $200 Pelican sit in from academy. Used it for 3 or 4 years. Had a blast and caught a lot of crappie in that old pelican and then sold it for $100.

This^^^. There is no reason to rush when buying a kayak. Things to think about is resale. If you save enough money to get a solid name brand kayak,,,nomatter the brand, you will be able to sell the boat faster and for more money than you would if it were a cheep no name kayak. In turn i think the better boats are actually cheeper in the long run. The most important thing is that you get the yak that fits your needs not budget.

Stay patient and be ready to move. A buddy told me about an add in paper of guy having yard sale that weekend and had a Perception Illusion for sale for $200, 14 foot. I went that day (two days before yard sale) and bought it for the asking price. I would have paid twice that as it looked like it had never been used though a discontinued model for many years.

they were all good deals that I moved on quickly when I found out someone was selling.. only the perception came with paddle, the rest just the hulls. I used them a few times, mounted flush mounts rodholders on the ones without and sold them for $400 bucks as fast as I put them up for sale.

This was a few years ago but there are still many good deals on brand name kayaks if you move fast when they come up.

fish will never care how much your vessel cost ya. only people do. The $ is a non issue.
