I built me a thumper that I could easily leave on the boat or take off and put away. Real pain to build. I know what BOBO goes through. wink
It is remote controlled so I can turn it on or off from the fishing chairs. I used autocad to design the cam. That is a SS ball bearing on the hammer shaft. I think it will work just fine. 30 RPM motor with 3 lobe cam = 90 beats per minute What do you think guys. It is connected to the boat into the channel that Lowe boats have. No Holes Drilled. Bobo, you certainly don't need to worry about competition. Building this things stink. More time than its worth.

That should work. Congratulations, and your arm thanks you also.

Nice job C Worthy, after building two different kinds I agree "lots of time". I like the roller bearing idea on the hammer, will help with my problem of metal to metal friction and wear on cam. Ebay has lots of rheostats that will make it variable speed if you like. Nice touch with the rail mount, units out of the way and not dancing around on the floor.

Thanks guys, I am a little proud of it. I have a variable speed controller board but decided to go with a lower gear motor and tri-lobal cam instead. These little motors are rated kg per cm. The farther away from the shaft you get, the more energy it takes to lift the hammer. So with the lower geared motor, I get a higher kg/cm rating. The last thing I want to do is slow a 30 rpm motor down, instead I had to figure out how to make it lift the hammer more often. I came up with the tri-lobal cam which provided 90 beats per min which I kind of feel like is close to a good tempo.

It looks like it will work just fine. I agree with the roller bearing. I have been installing an oil impregnated bronze bushing for a while now that has helped with the friction factor. If any of the guys who have the first style without a roller want one, email or pm and we'll work it out.
CW, can yours be removed easily? Have you come up with a cover of some sort for protection from the elements when you fish in the rain yet? It looks like you spent some time and hair pulling to get a design that should work well. Until someone goes through the process they don't realize just how long it takes and how much head scratching goes on. And since I didn't have 10 grand + to spare for a patent attorney I did it myself and would gladly design and build any number of contraptions before I do a patent application again. Those things are the debil!!! Lol
Good job sir!

Nice job Mr. Worthy. I looked into building one and gave BoBo some cash for a great product. Me building one myself would have cut into beer and fishing time lol.

It definitely cuts in to fishing time. I did have to get the design down first but I can have a beer or two now while building them. grin

Mr BoBo, thank you for your comments. On "MY" boat it is extremely easy to remove and put back on. That is the reason I built my own. Lowe fishing machines have that channel in the railing for attaching things to. All or my rod holders, down riggers, and anything else is attached to the channel so no hole drilling, which I like. As for the weather cover, I am planning on removing the thumper and removing the hammer. Then spraying the entire unit with truck bed coating (spray can at Lowe's) Since the motor draws less than .25 amps, there is no heat issue to deal with so coating the entire motor is no problem. Just tape the shaft to keep it from getting coating on the area where the shaft enters the motor. There really isn't anything else except for the remote circuit which is non-repairable (throw away and replace) so just lay a nice coat of truck bed coating all over it. Well, thats the plan anyway. I hope you have a bunch of these made up because building these one at a time would be a big stink-o project. As far as a cover, if I can pretty much waterproof it, I am not going to worry about a cover.

Sounds like a plan that should work. My motors draw .11 amps and they get pretty warm. You may be alright with the coating though. You might try flipping your hammer over and letting the motor run overnight and see how warm it is. Just to be sure. You might be surprised.
I buy my parts 100 at a time now. I'll build 20 or so at a time too. I have a regular assembly line at my house. I just wish I had a couple more assembly line workers so I could go fish more. bang

That's pretty cool, we just put on some good pumping music and use our feet... bouncy

worked like a champ last time out; we were fishing humps and when the action died down and nothing on the graph we would just start up the music again and the graph filled up with fish and we started catching again. I guess Sandys like good county music. violin

Thumpers are just so contrary to all I was taught as a young fisherman.

The cam had to be made. I found a 2" x 1/8" thick aluminum disk and used autocad to make the cam pattern in order to get the three lobes exactly 120 degrees apart. AutoCAD made it much easier to get the arcs correct so there would be no binding. For anyone interested, (getting techy here smile ) by using a cam, you are able to get the maximum power from the motor since the motor is not lifting at an angle. Think of it this way. Which is easier, holding 5# straight out from your body and lifting it or just pushing it straight up over your head. Any way, by using the cam and a bearing on the hammer, the motor exerts less force and should last longer. (Well that's the hope smile )
