I am forever being texted pictures of people's sonar. Anglers are asking what is this, is this fish, what type of fish, how many fish, should I fish this? I love to help people catch fish, but some things are fish and some aren't fish and somethings are just unknown unless you catch it.

Below are some images from tonight. I ran out on Richland-Chambers when the wind dropped at 7 pm. These photos are all images of aggressively feeding white bass. Notice the changes in colors and density. Schools separate and bunch up and chase the bait. In the end, this is what you hope to see on your screen. If you only see 3 arches on your screen, you can fish it, but don't be surprised if you don't get a bite.

These images are off my HB Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA with both the 200 kHz and 83 kHz sonar settings active together. Incredibly clear and impressive unit.

Nice screen shots. Wish I had seen something like that today at EM. I did see the 2 or 3 arches though. Lol

It's important to note his speed - zero. If you are searching at 5 mph, it will look different - smaller arches. Thanks for sharing the pics. You were clearly over a lot of fish. I am also starting to see fish a few feet from the bottom in addition to those hugging the bottom, which look like bumps on the bottom.

"those hugging the bottom, which look like bumps on the bottom."
Dennis, when I'm searching for new brushpiles for crappie, if I ever see this I stop and fish it. Most times I'm rewarded with whites and the occasional hybrid.

Actually if you are searching at 5 mph, the shapes may vary little. It is based on a variety of factors. If your sonar is set with at least the 83 kHz cone on then you have a 1:1 ratio with depth and width, then the fish will present very similar as they stay on the cone longer based on their speed. The issue is where they are in the water column. Farther away and higher in the water, it is possible to get little showing up on the sonar while the actual numbers are much greater than what show on the screen. The definition will often become less pronounced as the movements appear altered and the returns will blur slightly appearing more as a blob than layered arches. The returns will often elongate with boat and/or fish movement as the returns are stretched with movement. During this event there were several bait schools being chased to the surface over a 2-3 acre area. Frequently the schools were broken and fast moving.
