I have a 1997 Chevy Silverado 1500 that I'm about to replace the tires on. I'm replacing Kuhmo Ecsta that the previous owner had on it. I'm looking to put on some on/off road all terrain tires. Was mostly looking at Cooper tires, possibly the AT3 or the AT3 copies sold at pep boys, discount tire, or NTB. The copies have a standard load or passenger rating but the AT3's have a XL or C rating. My question: Is the XL or C rating necessary for what I need, or can I get away with the standard loan rating for the tires? I only use this truck to tow my boat and the occasional trip to lowes. The reason I was looking at all terrain tires is because this last weekend i got stuck a couple times on a dirt road, and also just backing up my boat on flat grass a couple times. The current tires aren't bald but they barely passed inspection. I only drive this truck about 2,000 miles a year, so I'm not looking to spend a whole lot on tires. I am open to looking at other brands, just heard a lot of good things about cooper tires. The factory size is 235/75/15.

As long as the load rating on the tires meets or exceeds the GVWR on the truck you should be fine. Nowadays most places have signs posted and will not sell a tire that does not meet the vehicle load rating. I run Cooper 10 plys only because of the ranch I hunt is rough and rocky. I put Coooper AT3s in 235/70/16 on daughter's Liberty and she loves them.

This is as big as you can go without any modifications.

As an alternate (lower cost) brand of tire, Hercules tires are pretty good. There's a set on my truck and another set on the wife's ride. My tow rig (suburban) presently has general AT2's on it, if/when they wear out it'll get Hercules AT's as well.

Search their site for a dealer near you, usually smaller Indy shops.

It is what it is. Tires are going to make a minimal difference in what your looking for. Its probably a 2wd with an open differential, wet grass will just stick it sometimes.

I had a '94 with a limited slip and got stuck in wet grass more times than I care to admit or could count
