How do you guys feel about 8.5 or even 9:1 ratio casting reels? Aaron Martins, in his "how to" segment on MLF was adamant that they are the only way to go for almost all presentations. Do you think they are only for special techniques or do you use them for everything?

I use 8 gear for bottom contact, can't imagine using one for a 10xd nuts

Any bait that you use the rod to work (top water, Texas rig, Carolina rig, jig) I like a 7:1 or faster. Anything like a crankbait or spinner bait I like a 6:4 or slower

Use 6.5 for moving baits and 7.1 - 8.1 for plastics, jigs, etc...

I have an 8.0 Revo STX and a 9.0 Revo Rocket. I use them both with 10 lb flouro for medium to light finesse applications such as weightless Senko or Shakyhead. The speed comes in most handy since you may quickly end up with some unexpected slack that needs to be taken up in a hurry.

I find that a 7.1 works just fine for the heavier T-Rigs and C-Rigs.

PBs

LMB- 11 lbs., 7 oz. Falcon

Striper- 40 lb. Long Is. Sound
BlueCat- 30 lb. Texoma
Hybrid-8.2 lb. Lewisville
Cutthroat Trout-22" Yellowstone R, WY
Rainbow Trout- 21" Blitzen R, OR
Steelhead- 8 lb. Umpqua R, OR
Redfish-20 lb. Panama C. Bay, FL
