I try to keep it simple.
Other than a frog rod, a big swimbait rod, a medium swimbait rod, a small swimbait rod, a topwater rod, a small squarebill rod, a medium running cranking rod, a deepdiving cranking rod, a spinerbait rod, a Chatterbait rod, a pitching rod, a flipping rod, a Senko Rod, a Fluke rod, a Trickworm rod, a T-rig rod, a C-rig rod, a jig rod, a FBJ rod, a dropshot rod, a medium spinning rod, a light spinning rod, an UL spinning rod, and a couple closed faced spin cast rods for my friends that don't like the other rods, I don't carry a lot of technique specific rigs. Pretty much!

A lot of people start with a medium action 7' rod and use it for everything. Slowly but surely, many people expand their rod arsenals to include some technique specific stuff.
I would say the first step for a lot of folks is a heavier rod for jigs/flipping/pitching, maybe even small swimbaits.
From there maybe a medium light for smaller T-rigs, senkos or shaky heads.
So, how far do you take it?
Crankbait setup (or 3)?
Swimbait setup?
Jerkbait setup?
Senko setup?
Drop shot setup?
What's the most specific setup you have?
You don't???? Try fishing a Yellow Magic topwater on 20lb Fluoro with a 7'6" Heavy Action Rod OR try fishing a Texas Rig in 25' deep water with a 6'6" medium action rod with 12lb mono, OR even better yet try that setup with an Alabama Rig and see how that works. The right tool for the right job will get it done. You can't use a Flathead Screwdriver in a Phillips head screw! No, I do. Just wondering to what degree will people take it. I have a specific rod for 1.5 squarebills and another for 2.5s. I've got it pretty bad.

I've pretty much settled on 6 rods for plastics. 1 each for Trig Shakey head Drop shot Weightles Creature Crig All but trig have fast reels.
5 rods for cranks Deep diver Medium diver Shallow diver/squarebill Lipless Supspending jerkbait
2 for topwater Frog w/braid Popper, spook, buzzbai Some are interchangeable but all the ones for plastics are pretty dedicated.

Interestingly enough, for years Rick Clunn has advocated using one rod for all techniques. Supposedly He just carries many copies of the same rod. A Google search for Rick Clunn One Rod Theory will return lots of interesting reading Yeah but KVD can "Whip him like a yard dog". KVD said something close to that in response to Clunns one rod approach. Both have 4 classic wins and they are the only 2 to ever win back to back. But KVD Has more 3rd place finishes than anyone. When Clunn tried to win his 3rd consecutive classic he finished 2nd. Clunn has 11 top 5 finishes while KVD has 9. And Clunn has the record at 32 Classic appearances while KVD has 26. Clunn made it 28 consecutive time while KVD made it 22. But...that's getting off Topic...buts also interesting reading I will add that the competition that these 2 anglers face was just a wee bit different.. just saying

I have 9 cb rods. They are NOT specific to JUST CBs, though. They are designed for them, but I use the lighter rod for smaller baits and even use it for drop shotting. I use the medium setup for lighter smaller CBs and smaller SBs, too. MOSTLY I use MH rods for medium to deeper diving CBs. Those can also be versatile to using light Trigs or even light C-rigs andsome even can be used for topwater and smaller swimbaits. OF course, their ULTIMATE CB rod should be used for just that, like my Dobyns 805 CB RM rod, ti is a dedicated rod for deep divers OH, and it also throws 1 oz. dropshots very well, too. LOL. I have 2 jig/t-rig rods that also throw C-rigs. and then there is the MOST versatile rod in my lineup, a Dobyns 734 rod for almost anything. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
