Can you put in the river at the park in town or along I-10 and fish downstream and then paddle back up without much trouble, or is their too much current to mess with trying to paddle back up?

I've paddled that stretch and would be doable to paddle back up at the current CFS of 100 and even higher really. There may be a rapid or two you'd have to line your kayak back up because it may be too shallow to effectively paddle up the rapid. I'd go for it.

Also, the easier launch is from Kimble County Park on south/east shoreline just below the dam.

Yeah, that's where I figured I'd launch from if I was gonna do that paddle. It's always easier to not have to mess with a shuttle, when possible.

There is one rapid that is about 1/2 mile from the damn that will be tough to paddle back up. Its doable, but be prepared to paddle your a$$ off to get back to the dam! There is some great water down river from the I-10 bridge for sure.

If you need anymore info I will be glad to help. I've been kayaking and fishing the Llano for 11 years now.

I appreciate the info! That rapid you mention...could I get out and drag the kayak over it, or is it too deep?

I may have my 70 yr old dad with me, so I don't want to get him into anything too wild.

Also, when you say be prepared to paddle your a$$ off, do you mean just at that rapid, or the whole way?

Here are the satellite views of the rapid that I am talking about. I suppose you could walk back up them, but the last time I was down there it was about knee high and moving pretty well. I believe that would be your only trouble spot. The bass fishing right below the damn has traditionally been pretty good for us. Once you get past the I-10 bridge there is a lot of slack water and no public places to get out for quite a ways. If you two are strong paddlers then I don't see a problem. You'll just have to paddle hard when coming back up those two short rapids is all. When are you planning your trip?

Good deal. Thank you!

I'm going to my deer lease this weekend west of town to shoot an axis doe or two. I'll probably take my kayak as well. If Dad goes with me we may just get a shuttle and fish the South Llano between the two 377 crossings for an easier time. I should probably do the I-10 stretch by myself first to scope it out and make sure it's something I could take Dad on.
