The main purpose of a bass is to survive by eating and reproducing bigger, stronger offspring.

In general,
Male bass are built for speed (they fight and scare off nest raiders)
Female bass are built to carry eggs. The larger the female, the more and larger eggs she can carry.

So when you see a big, huge belly on a bass; the odds are it's female.

To actually determine male or female bass, you can examine the vent opening (circular=male elliptical=female). Guess you could gently squeeze toward the vent opening and see if milt (male) or eggs (female) are released.
