actually, they don't rot n the ground...they just don't keep as long...i hang mine in knee-hi pantyhose after drying out...before i read this, i'd have rotten onions...now, when i see a bolt flower, i pull it and eat it so i won't store it and have it stinky rotten...just tryin' to save u a stinky rotten onion in storage

Crapeytr- please explain more on the hanging them in pantyhose.... 1 onion per leg? Do you trim all the leaves off or leave them on? How long is this drying time? Do you wash them first to knock excess soil off? Trim the roots off or leave intact? Hopefully I will have an abundance of good onions here in a while (had mine planted since early October)

hang them in the shade until the tops are completely dry...2 weeks, maybe more...the top next to the onion should be completely dry...cut the tops off but don't cut into the onion...cut the roots off with scissors...put it in the kneehi hose...tie it off...i use ties that come in a box of trash bags...repeat until the hose if full...usually about 7 depending on the size of the onions...hang in the garage or storeroom from the bottom so you can untie from the top

this past year (2016) the onions were to big to do that so i laid them out like this

i put as many as i could in the icebox i have in the garage...i used my last onion in February...
