I used to live in West Texas and my wife and I would go camping in the mountains and I would do some fly fishing. We recently relocated back to Central Texas and we are still wanting to make it to the mountains and my wife suggested we go to Wyoming this time.

Has anyone done any fly fishing out there and if so, what areas did you go to?

I've never been to Wyoming, been to Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, and Colorado though. I've heard it's nice, but there's a lot of great camping, scenery and fly fishing a lot closer in Colorado and New Mexico!

The Wind River range is spectacular...and offers miles of excellent trout fishing.

Perhaps one of the top trout per mile streams anywhere would be the Green River...something like 4000 trout per mile....and they are always hungry.

The scenery on the Green River is about as good as it gets outside Alaska. Looking down on the Flaming Gorge from the bridge is absolutely breathtaking. Wyoming is great!

We plan on flying and renting a cabin. I'm thinking it will be in August when we go.

The Green River/Flaming Gorge area is on our hit list! That would be an awesome trip. Cant go wrong with Yellowstone or the Snake either.

I live in Montana but pretty close to Wyoming. I would look at the Bighorn in Wyoming. I would look at both Teton National Park and Yellowstone. Numerous rivers to fish(Snake, Gallatin, Madison, Teton, Yellowstone, Gibbons, Firehole, Lamar, etc...)in both of those places. I would tell you to come a bit later than August. September and October are special times of the year up here for both wildlife and fishing. October is off the charts on the Madison in the Park. Fish are coming out of lake to spawn and you can catch incredible quantities of big fish.

Crowds are less in October and wildlife is better viewing. If you came in September the elk are in rut and that is really cool. We moved here from Texas 6 years ago and I still own a ranch there but you should give yourself as much time as you can on your first trip up here. It is a special place.
I would suggest flying into Jackson and spending a couple of days there and then driving through park and staying in West Yellowstone. Madison is going to be on the Montana side some and some in Wyoming. The other idea is to do Flaming Gorge and Green River then drive up. I would suggest doing a few days in multiple places the first time. It is a big area that you could spend a month in and barely scratch the surface.

Let me know if I can help and bring bear spray!

I spent 6 months this past year guiding in Wyoming and it was unbelievable. Most of my time was spend guiding on the north plate river, just outside of saratoga which is an amazing river to fish and plenty of public access. The encampment river is also there in the same area and is a great river as well. My favorite place that I fished all season was the wind river in the Indian reservation just outside of thermopolis. The giant canyon walls on each side of the river make it a beautiful place to fish. I caught more big fish on that river the few days we spent there than I did all the rest of the summer combined. We walked the big boulders on the river bank and sight casted down to giant browns with dry flies. It's tough fishing though, a lot of walking on rough terrain, but well worth it.

Eric, nice fish! Have fished the Platte and like it. If Ben has not done much fly fishing is the boulder hopping in the Wind River technical or is it something a beginning fly fisherman can be successful at? Just curious your opinion.

It's some pretty technical casting between rocks with trees and bushes at your back,I've been fly fishing a long time and it was still pretty tough for me.

We are going up to Island Park in October. What flies do you recommend? Is it all nymphing?

I've fished the Snake River at Jackson in early June and the river was high and muddy with the snow melt. I've fished several rivers in Yellowstone in early September but would suggest a bit later as recommended above.
