Just curious if anyone has purchased a Shimano reel directly from a Japanese vendor? Im looking at getting a Shimano 16 Metanium MGL. Are they the exact same reels? Is it worth saving $75 any input would be appreciated

Can you return/exchange it domestically if theres a problem? How about warranty coverage in the US?

When you buy a JDM product, you have no warranty in the US as I understand it. That wouldn't stop me from buying one though.
I've bought several reels from Japan either because they were significantly cheaper or they were models not available to the USDM.
Digitaka and Japan lure Shop are the two places I have bought from recently. Great service and crazy fast shipping.
Oh and yes a JDM Metanium MGL is the same as a USDM Met MGL.

+1 no warranty in the US but so worth it to get some of the JDM models.

I've bought Shimano reels out of japan in the past and had no problems. The reels I use the are their scorpions and I have never had a problem with any of them.

I bought a Shishamo casting reel from a Facebook ad, and it's really a pretty nice reel - but they sent me a oeft-hand retrieve model, and my muscle memory won't allow me to use it well.

purchased several Shimano scorpions like over 10 years ago and everyone is still working perfect. The US made version Curado hasn't held up a well.

What's the difference from buying one here? Are they made there in Japan?

The main reason to buy reels from Japan is to get models that they don't sell here in the USA. Daiwa does not sell the Ryoga here, so I bought one from a Japanese retailer. You can definitely be SOL with warranty issues, so buyer beware.

Just bought a Daiwa lithium battery pack for my Tanacom reel from a seller in Japan. And I bought it precisely because US Daiwa dealers dont carry one at all.

Only oddity is that the instruction manual is entirely in Japanese pictograms. Oh, yeah, Daiwa USA does not provide warranty coverage - if I have a problem, I have to ship it to Japan. Would never have thought to buy this from Japan were it nor for this thread.
