Ok, I like to use weights while I am fishing for catfish. So I went fishing at lake Fork yesterday and I indeed got hung up 5 times to lose my entire rig. So I got the wild idea that I might not hate breaking this off as much if I made my own weights. I am curious if any of you have done this and if it is as cost effective as it looks like it might be. Now I have no intention of going into business but would like to make jigging spoons and tail spinners also. So if any of you guys have a reason why this is not a good idea please let me know. Now I do realize that lead is dangerous and am smart enough not to sniff the stuff. When I was younger I made many plastic worms for fishing and found it great fun to catch fish on baits that I made.

If you find a local tire guy that is a fisherman and is willing to give you Lead, then you will be golden.(the key is to not buy materials) I have the molds and I like sitting in my shop and making weights. It was just a fad for me and I am stocked up for now. Just like anything, using the tools you have created is much more rewarding in my eyes.

Ok I got together with a gentleman that I met here on the forum last night. He has loads of experience making his weights . We made a few weights and he filled me with the knowledge required to successfully make mine. So I wanted to say thank you to him and also the forum. I have met many nice folks on this forum who are willing to share knowledge. Now this was particularly helpful because he not only told me but also showed me. I learn better by watching.

I went to my weight making. It is not a bad job at all. I made 168 no roll!weights and now plan to get the molds for a few jugs that I like to fish. It was fairly fun and I have enough now to last me over a year. I need to make a decision if I want to continue to make my own tackle. It is fun to catch fish on things that you make yourself. So if I have a failure with my weights I will be blaming myself only.
