I've been fishing LBJ very hard the past few months and figured I'd give a generic report.

Most of big fish (5-7#) have been coming around the Horsehoe Bay area, dam area, and mid-lake area. I usually run up the river at least once a trip, but I haven't had much success with any size, numbers have been good though. Water temps up in the Colorado are high 50's with it reching low 60's in the afternoon; same goes for the Llano. Water temps on the main lake are mid to high 50's with Horseshoe Bay being right around 60-63 all day long. Water is mostly clear with it getting stained the further towards the river you go.

In November I was catching fish in grass on reaction baits such as, cranks, spinnerbaits, and rattle traps. Any color worked as long as it was shad-based. The depths I was targeting were 3-8 feet. I didn't have a lot of success with plastics in the grass, except for a Tx-rigged creature bait in the 3" size; green pumpkin/red flake. Rattle traps caught most of my bigger fish. Docks came into play during the afternoon and I skipped a jig underneath them. Color didn't matter as they would usually hit it on the fall.

In December I had luck fishing the remaining grass with a white vibrating jig coupled with a white swimbait. Grass at any depth produced but 4-6ft was the best. When the bite in the grass died I went and found rocks in a broad range of depths (8-25ft). For depths of 8-10ft I threw an underspin coupled with a 4" swimbait and a Smithwick Rogue in the black chrome pattern. For depths of 11-15ft I threw an A-rig with 4" swimbaits, a Smithwick Rogue Perfect 10, a 5" Basstrix Paddletail Swimbait in the shad color, and if they were on the bottom, I threw a 3/4oz football jig topped off with a Berkley Chigger Craw. In depths of 16ft+ I threw all of the above, except a jerkbait. If they were on the bottom, I threw a Norman DD22 (shad colored), a football jig, or a swimbait (shad colored) on a lead jighead (3/4oz). My bigger fish came in the 15ft range on swimbaits and football jigs.

I am thinking of going to LBJ in a couple of weeks. Looking at the LCRA page the lake should be up to normal levels again? At any rate, how is the fishing in mid-March? I don't have any fishing experience on that lake so I could use some intel. I am looking more for numbers than size (for the kids). I've got a fish-and-ski that will do 50+ MPH so I can cover a lot of water if need be.
