Planning to go below Whitney as of right now. What is too low to have an enjoyable day? would below PK be a better trip for any reason?

I'd say you can float with very little flow, but a South wind will make things difficult in combination with low flow.

Good fishing in that stretch and you never know what you'll catch from largemouth to smallmouth, etc...

Cody, we just went this past weekend. Launched from the dam to dicks. Launched at 6:30... to our surprise they opened the gates at 8:30, and we were hauling [censored] doing 5-6mps down the river. Not much fish caught... LOL. Just check for their release. If it looks consistent all week, they will probably release all weekend if the weather calls for rain.

What you're seeing is hydroelectric generating....not releases due to rain. There is no schedule or good way to predict when or how long they will generate. Generators were decommissioned below pk a few years back, so no hydroelectric generating there.

If your not familiar with the flow numbers below Whitney, typically the river rises about 6' when they generate. Current speed will average around 3-4mph.

If you choose to do the PK to Whitney stretch, watch out for a pair of kayakers that are brothers, one is a sophomore in college and his brother is a senior in high school. They're from my youth group, and their mama sure would appreciate knowing there's good folks on the river with them. !!!

Yes, Brazos is my real name.

CFROG, how far are you planning to go belwo Whitney, 8 miles to Dicks or back to the dam? And yes, they will release at any moment below Whitnet.

I've gotten caught down stream from Dicks when they started generating and it was no fun. If you do go below Whitney and they generate then look for any out cropping or creek that enters the Brazos and fish there. The bass go there to get out of the current.

They are averaging a release a day right now. Rains could change it to be a consistant release. Keep an eye on the weather. They can't tell you when they plan to release but the bass fishing is really good.

I have not been on the Brazo for a year now because of the threat of them opening a gate. That is at PK and Whitney. Does anyone know any other spats that are a little safer bet? I sometimes take the Wife or grandkids and dont want a suprise. Thanks

Another idea is to go below pk's brazos streach. 16 bridge to rochelles. It's 20 miles but you can camp along the way. Water does seem to be more on a schedule.

We ended up going below PK. Turned out to be a beautiful day and the water levels were a tad low but we had a great day
