How is the fishing right now? I will be camping at Purtis Creek for 4 days during Spring Break. If I were to fish I would have to set up camp and go back home for the boat, but don't want to waste time if the lake is dead. I haven't fish there in approx. 20 yrs so I have no idea about the lake now. Thanks

Depends on what you are fishing for. The crappie are starting to bite.

If you haven't fished it in 20 years, don't expect it to be the lake you remember...no grass...much fewer bass. [Frown face]

TPWD put grass carp in there, grass gone, fishing went to pot. Think lake austin only worse.

I am usually a big supporter of TPW, but I have to agree. Stocking grass carp in Purtis Creek was the worst idea they have ever come up with. It ruined the Bass population. We used to routinely catch double digit bass and were very proud of the catch and release certificates they would award you with. Purtis Creek was indeed started as a Trophy fish management lake. Now they have carp tournaments. In a time when all our State Parks are experiencing budget cuts, it makes no sense to deeply cut their revenues by losing fisherman and visitors. Bad business!!! Never did figure out why someone wasn't fired over ruining a fishery.

+1, could not agree more, what happened makes no sense to what should have been a great asset to the state

I never had the pleasure of fishing Purtis Creek 20 years ago, but we try to go to Purtis Creek once a year around April. We always seem to catch several nice fish in the 6 to 8 pound range. I can't say we ever catch big numbers but the quality fish are there. I do know that I rarely see more than 6 or 8 boats on the water so you have most of the lake to yourself. Wasn't a share lunker caught there 3 or 4 years ago?

+2, caught my pb there. I think it was two years before the introduction of grass carp. Haven't fished it for 8 or 9 years. frown

I too caught my pb there about six years ago, now I don't think it is worth fishing, even if it has a few good fish in it. I know they are trying to get some grass to grow back but still will take a long time.
