For bluegills, what's y'alls preference in preparing and cooking? Favorite recipes? Also, what is the best scaler out there for reasonable price?

Heading fishing for first time in 2+ years and need your input.

God bless!

Michael

for 5-6 inch fish (if you keep that size) scale em and pan dress em (cut head off and scoop out guts w/o cutting belly in half). anything over that in size, if I get five or less, I pan dress, but i'll spilt the belly on these since they are larger. If i get more than 5 that are 7inches or better, I strictly fillet as you'll get a good amount of meat from gillz this size if your decent with a fillet knife. Hope this helps.

Best thing to scale with imo is a large spoon.

I use a spoon to scale em. Works fine. As for the perfect eating size 7 to 8 inch. Also I might keep some nine inch fish. I always let the 10 plus go. Hopefully they will keep producing the bigger fish. thumb

Side Note: I have grilled, baked, broiled, and fried em. They all are GREAT ways to cook up Bluegill. I like em fried the best. I dip them in mustard then into a big pile your favorite fish mix and then right into the super hot cooking oil. I like mine fried well done! food

We are camping at Guadalupe river state park but I may take a day trip to either Inks Lake or Dunlap (never fished there).

What day will you be at Dunlap if you decide to go there? If I am not busy I will try to meet ya! Always enjoy meeting other members of the TFF! cheers

That would be great !!! I'm not sure what day that may be yet but I'll try to let you know. Probably march 17 or 18? Are there any good public spots with fishing access on Dunlap? Thanks for all the help. By the way, when you said you coat the gills in mustard and then in favorite coating did you mean regular yellow or Dijon mustard? Thanks !!!

This is hands down the best scaler you will ever find. Good luck finding someone who has used it and does not agree.

I do not target sunfish but I have ate my share of them over the years. Love em fried dipped in mustard and then dipped in fish fry mix. Can't beat em. I target Catfish,White Bass, and Stripers. Fillet them all! I also prefer frying them as well.
