Curious as what other folks have done in the past - whether it's using a guide in Venice, LA to chase tuna or any other offshore fishing adventure. When the captain brings a deckhand, the captain typically suggests that we tip the deckhand, which I get. But do you also tip the captain as well?

Just curious what everyone does. It just feels like I end up doing a lot of tipping after a trip, which is already pricey.

Thanks

Tip 15% to the deckhand maybe $450 on a 3k trip. I tip $250!

way I see it- in Venice, I've already paid for all the fuel in the boat, captain's got
his 1000-1500 for the day, tip goes to the deck hand.

Boat captain dosnt always own the boat or the operation and works just as hard as the deck hand to put folks on fish. My tips are always based on the amount of work and determination that is put in.

If the Captain went above the call of duty, if he gave you a trip to always remember, if you caught a personal best, or if you wish to get preference points on attending another trip with this Captsin- then tip! I guided offshore, Bay, and Bowhunting for years. It's the best job a guy could ever ask for! Unfortunately, after expenses, cancellation's, bad weather, nagging X-wives, etc., guides have a JOB. Just Over Broke! Just saying, I'd tip for a good trip! Hope your trip is awesome! CK

When I ran kingfish trips I never expected a 15% tip but always appreciated an extra 50. Most all off my customers gave me at least that much and usually dubble. I then gave the deckhand if I had one most of it unless they treated him the same. We also cleaned the fish so they could enjoy kings done right. They always tipped us a lot for that. May have been the beer and having their wives there seeing how they could provide dinner. Some of my best memories

Btw I was not doing it for a living it was mostly supplemental income so tips were not crucial I also caught my own ribbon fish and trapped my own piggy Perch so I knew I had the best bait available and I took it bad if we did not have limits so I agree with the above about taking care of a crew that goes the extra mile. There are lazy captains that just want the money

Usually pool the tips from whatever each guy wants to give and let the Captain split them up. I always wondered what the deckhands get pre-tip from the Captain.
