I'm looking to build or buy something like this. This one is $1333 on ebay, but I'm sure the shipping from Michigan is going to bump the price up quite a bit. It's primarily going to be used to shuttle kayaks from the shop down to the lake, which is only about 200 yards give or take. Other purpose is a good mobile storage solution.

Any other ideas for a kayak trailer? Build or buy?

this lake must be on Pluto. It takes 200 years to get there! grin

Seems like a man could buy a regular small boat trailer used and add on the hardware to hold the Kayaks. With that being said, $1333 plus shipping may not be a bad price.

How many kayaks are you carrying? You can buy a cheap utility trailer and put elevated crossbars on it, something like the Malone TopTier Cross Bar System ($270). That would probably carry 4-5 kayaks and free up the trailer for other uses.

A Malone kayak trailer plus their 2-tier add-on would run about $1600.

9 kayaks - 3 SUPs - won't store all of them on the trailer - maybe 6 or 8 kayaks and 2 SUPs.

Buying something to carry more than 4 kayaks can be pricey.

https://www.austinkayak.com/products/8381/Trailex-Six-Kayak-Capacity-Trailer-SUT-450-M6.html

https://www.remackeltrailers.com/product/8-place-canoe-or-kayak-trailer-copy/

Also, once you start stacking them high on a trailer, loading and unloading the top ones can take 2-3 people. I paddle a lot with this group, we don't even hassle with the very top rack for hauling kayaks or canoes.

I think I might want to take this project on for our next trip to Falcon. Be much better to share a ride and swap off driving. cheers

This might work if you already have a trailer to use. It doesn't look like you would have to go so high with only two tiers. After looking at it some more, it might depend on type kayaks you have. Skinny or aircraftcarriers. smile

JP, you can buy this boat trailer in Dallas for $200. The materials to make the racks should be less than $300. I can weld it together foryou. That's the least I could do after all you've done for all of us. I made the racks for my trailer. They are rather beefy since I'm hauling kayaks on the interstate.

get a harbor freight trailer and have someone weld some brackets to handle multiple yaks. Should cost no more than $500 as they put their trailers on sale pretty often for less than $300. You're just using it for storage and a short haul; no need for anything fancy-p-

I started to post the exact thing, but I didn't want people to know exactly how cheap I am! roflmao

A good start would be the trailer for sale in the Kayak classifieds on this site.

I'm trying to work a trade. If it doesn't work out, I've seen quite a few trailers on Craig's List that could be modified. Thanks for the offer Bass Art. I'll definitely give you a shout if the barter doesn't happen.

So here's what I came up with. Found a nice aluminum trailer here on the TFF - it's a 5x8. Yes, I can remove the ramp.

Going to fab something like this to go on it.

That will work J.P. Are you welding up the rack yourself?

Old post to bring up. I ended up buying the rack rather than getting one made. The guy I bought the rack from out of Florida was very slow to deliver. I think I finally had to open a PayPal grievance to get it, but it is well made. It paired well with the aluminum trailer I bought.
