I recently purchased a home in Holiday beach and will be launching my boat from there. Anyone familiar with that area and do I need to worry about shallows? I don't know the area and do not want to ground my boat. Any advise on hot spots for fishing in that area is appreciated! Thanks, Mark

Go to H-E-B or Tackle Town and buy the Hook'n'Line map for Copano Bay and St. Charles Bay. Study it and Google Earth, and slow down, until you learn about the area where you want to boat. Have fun!

Where you are putting in at there is not a whole lot to worry about. When you get close to the shorelines watch out becasue the water depth will change pretty quickly. It is deep all the way back to turtle pen on the far north side of the bay. Turtle pen lake is fairly shallow but obviously so. There are not any reefs to worry about until you get to Newcomb Point (just to the south of you). Lap reef runs from there to Redfish Point with a few areas that get shallow. Usually the wind is blowing enough you can see the white caps breaking. From there to the south and west there is a ton of shell but it is pretty deep. A good GPS with the chip would be really helpful for you.

There are 4 reefs that offer the biggest navigation hazards: Lap, Copano, Shellbank, and Rattlesnake Pt. (See attached map) Parts of those reefs are exposed others tend to be just below the water's surface. Also, the Northwest through Southwestern shoreline (green line) goes from plenty deep to run regardless of water level to "Oh S***, this is really shallow" a lot quicker than other shorelines. Any GPS with a navigation chip will show these reefs.

You can catch fish year round in Copano Bay year round.

Tides, moon phase and time of year to fish those spots is the key.

Salt lake is good for redfish, especially around the small islands.

Be very careful of submerged shallow pipelines - they can be a real hazard in there.
