I don't know about you, but I need good to very good quality white bucktails and in quantity. Have a sizable order to fill, and am running low. Seem to be hard to find these days. Anybody have a source? I will probably hit Barlow's first, but that's a (dangerous) distance from Denton. Anybody?

Pretty much cherry picked the few they had at Barlow's two days ago, and the one (1) good one at "Cabellos" FW location. Talking to the gentleman at Barlow's - yup there is a shortage of white, and to top it off they are discontinuing one of my all-time favorite hooks the Mustad 39994 D. Never heard from anyone here, so there MUST BE a shortage. Any deer hunters reading?

What must be done to a deer tail to preserve it? Seems like it would be pretty easy to come by those in the winter months. Find a meat processor and they are probably throwing them away daily.

Most of the ones I buy don't smell preserved, but they are split open and flattened, and I guess tanned somehow.

Hey Guys, I'm a taxidermist and if you can skin and salt hide heavy, then let them dry flint hard, the will last a few years, very minimal to no smell if done right. What kind of price do tails bring? I could start saving them, may have a few now buried some wheres in a freezer.

Plan for next hunting season. If you do not know many hunters, find the places that process deer. I only got 2 this last yr and will be splitting those to die different colors. AK Best has a book on dying feathers, fur and bucktails. Step one to preserve is to put in zip lock and throw in the freezer until you can deal with them. If too dry and stiff you can soak them some. Just scrape all the fat and flesh off with a stiff knife held upright. Easiest to use something like a 5 gallon bucket in lap... the curved surface helps.. Also works for squirrel, coon and rabbit... Once you get them clean apply a goodly layer of 50/50 common salt and Boraxo (you can also apply when you first shoot the animal or find the road kill) AK Best has additional instructions for cleaning / de-greasing before dying... It is a good book. I would also suggest planning a sink outdoors or in the garage / shed if you are married (well, even if not married). From dirty hands to fish and critters you should already have one.
