I was night fishing on Fayette Tuesday when this Unidentified Floating Object went past my boat close to shore. At first it looked like a log but there was no current and it had to be at least 8 feet long. I followed it as it went up the cove but when I got close to it it submerged. I am thinking it was a gar but I have never seen one that some of its body was above the surface. Has anyone ever seen something similar?

Thought it could be a gator but it was more grayish in color, smooth back, and its tail was not "snaking".

certainly far enough south to be a gator.....definitely loch ness monster though this time of year, they travel like salmon to Fayette to spawn. I mean that seems reasonable, right?

Thought it could be a gator but it was more grayish in color, smooth back, and its tail was not "snaking". How could you tell at night? Did you have a Qbeam on it? Aligators look almost black in the water, but if their back has been out of the water for long, it'll be gray. Smooth back and no "snaking" tail could also be due to perception at night? But you may have been right in assuming Alligator Gar. They can grow to that size and there are some GIANTS in that lake. Record for the river in that area is 7 feet 5 inches. I had to look that part up.

I can tell you what this is, only because I had a similar encounter... possibly...
My situation turned out to be some kind of river rat (still unknown if it was a nutria or beaver) dragging a log through the water. I guess since the log was so big it was keeping it slow enough to not have a big wake...
Hope this helps.

Real question is how was the fishing?
I can backlash toilet paper.
