...on war painted males (I'm guessing to attract the females, kind of like in the bird kingdom), orange and yellow-colored eggs (some with a bloodline thru them), and different types of vegetation that they like to spawn in and around. ...thank you, in advance

If you can find matted grass or matted water weeds in shallow water... Punch a jig through it. Spawn should be on in Waco. Yellow eggs have a ways to go. Orange eggs close, orange eggs with red blood veins very close to spawning.. Not positive about spawning bed base...
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Crappie like a hard bottom to spawn on. Gravel with structure is perfect. If you can't find gravel look for hard clay with structure.

Also look for hard bottom sand flats. We got a long one near the bank here at Bachman. Both the bass and crappie spawn on it, and it can be spectacular at times!

Being a bass fisherman you can relate. Take a 1/4 spinnerbait with a white skirt (trim skirt a little).Add a Colorado blade that has a good 'thump' to it
Then go down the bank reeling it real slow. The crappie will tell you where they are. When you catch one, fish the area real good with something small, like a 1/16" oz. jighead with a 2" curly tail grub (white or off white).
Bass guys tell me all the time where they have caught crappie on spinnerbaits and I go catch them this way.
