Received these photos today from Mke Frazier, the owner of Cameot Bell. I don't know this young man but his Dad stocked their new lake with fingerlings from the Bell five years ago. They've obviously got their water quality and baitfish populations dialed in. Congratualtions to the angler on a beast. That's an astounding growth rate.

I don't know what Mike charges, but it's hard for me to imagine there are genetics out there that are much better! Giant Genes!

Here's a 10 month old Camelot Bell offspring from MIke's new lake. Dunno a weight on this one but he weighed some others recently that were over 3 lbs. Blows me away.

Especially well bred animals like those from Overton Fisheries in Buffalo, but any largemouth bass can grow surprisingly fast with the proper conditions. In one lake years ago.....at the long defunct Lakes of Danbury.
We harvested 6 inch fingerlings about 3 months post spawn and stocked into a 25 acre lake that had been previously stocked with a now banned species Tilapia zillii.
Within another five months most of the fish grew to an average of five pounds. They were hard to catch until water temps dipped to the low 60's and all the tilapia died. Then the fish were easy to catch. Now passed, Houston Chronicle sports writer Joe Doggett came out and fished then wrote an article entitled "Brick Bass," because the fish were so fat they had square bellies. Two years after that TV fisherman John Fox caught a twelve pound bass in the lake, a bass that was less than four years of age.
This was more than twenty five years ago and we'd yet heard of places like Camelot Bell or La Perla, but the Lakes of Danbury was open and going strong, a forerunner of these later operations that employed similar management techniques we developed many years ago at LOD.

Glad I was member of LOD when it was still awesome. You did a helluva job designing and managing those lakes and hatchery ponds for the Zwahr family, Fishbreeder.

Well....it was a team effort.
It was ahead of its time and a very interesting thing to be a part of. Plus I met and fished with a lot of really interesting folks. People like,
Melvin Fisher, Johnny Bench, Daryl Lamonica, Zell Roland, and a buncha more.
One thing 'bout fishin' an' folks.....fishing for sport is the number one participation sport upon Planet Earth. So you get to meet all manner of both different, but like minded people. Nuthin' else like it.

Way to go there Mike!!! Those are some Camelot fatty genetics!! It's been fun fishing for those Giants these last few years. Lots of memories. Glad to see those genetics spread out so more people can have similar experiences.

Genetics or all the other factors (water quality, forage base, habitat, and harvest) is the great debate. Most of my lake management friends side with the other factors as being far more important than genetics. And I agree. However, the real debate is top end growth. Does a superior genetic fish give you 2%,5%,10% or even 20% more top end growth. The current data is subjective. But, I believe not all Florida bass are the same, and since the cost of stocking bass in a private lake is a tiny expense compared to building and stocking the forage, why not get great genetics if your goal is to have a trophy bass fishery.
On another note, many landowners think they want a trophy bass lake, but very few have the pocket book to really have one. Moreover, I think the average fisherman would be floored on how much time and money (commitment) it takes to have a true trophy fishery.

Not to mention how much culling it takes, Steve.
