Hello Fly Fishing Brethren,
I recently moved to Lake Travis/ Hill country area and I'm trying to get back into fly fishing (only fly fished in the Sierras and San Juan river a few times in the past). I currently have a TFO 5wt 9ft 4 piece. I was thinking of getting a little shorter and lighter rod to add to my arsenal that I'd use in the local tighter spots. I was thinking something in the 7ft X inch 3wt. I can't afford a $500 sage or anything like that. Do you think this would be the right addition? Any rod suggestions?

I have a copy of Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country on route to me now in order to find some spots to get going but if you have any suggestions please PM me or reply here.

thanks,
J5

Cabela's CGR

I have this in the 2 wt and it's my favorite rod for sunfish on hill country rivers. Before BPS bought Cabela's they were like $70 bucks, but they are still a deal at their current price.

Love mine when I'm fishing small streams or when I know the fish are going to be on the smaller size. Makes it fun. Landed bigger fish upto 4# just had to play them out. Little harder to cast but not hard to get use to. I have a TFO 7'6" Professional. Great rod for the $ and you can't beat the warranty. Paired it with a Orvis Clearwater reel

Bass Pro and Cabelas both have completely wonderful little three weights in various models, most of which won't break the bank and will catch fish. That has been my experience at any rate.

I would look at the TFO rods, I have 2 of them. I bought a Cabelas CGR 3 weight and was extremely disappointed. The reel seat is just a couple of pieces that slide onto the reel. I ended up taping the reel in place. I didn't even realize they still made reel seats that way until I received it.

I've got a Redington Classic Trout in the 8'6" 3WT and love it. Cost about $150. You can order through Cabela's but I'm not sure if they have them stocked in stores.

BPS has not (yet) bought Cabelas. BPS has made an offer, but the deal will likely not close until October, if at all.

I got a TFO BVK 8ft 3wt and the kit to use it as a 10ft. The 8ft is great in creeks and small water and l really like the ability to convert to a 10ft for ponds lakes and rivers. Great rod for wading.

I have a TFO 8ft 3wt BVK and love it. With this rod you have the option to buy the conversion kit that will make it 10ft. I add the conversion when fishing larger rivers and lakes.
Good Luck

Thanks guys. My existing rod is a TFO 9ft 5wt which I've been happy with. I think I'm going to pickup a TFO 7'6 Pro 3wt. and pair it with a Orvis Battenkill II.

Another great choice would be the Cabelas Three Forks.

I love my CGR and have a ton of fun with it on very small water, but I agree with this. The rods go on sale often and it's worth it at $60, but not at the $129 normal price.

the cabela's three forks is the best bargain anywhere. I have a couple of them and the little 3 weights are just right for small creeks/rivers and in lakes with an ample supply of brim. They will put them on sale pretty regularly. Everyone who fly fishes should have at least one-p-
