I've bought new reels before with no issue. Usually they are returns without the box and paperwork.

I'll never buy a reel from the bargain cave again.

The tension knob feels like it would work, but when you spool it up and place a trig/jig on the line; there is no difference between the tension knob fully tight and fully loose.

Taken the reel apart a couple of times (there's a missing part).

Other than the tension knob not doing anything, the reel works well (good casts, handle turns well, good drag). I just have to use my thumb as the tension.

That's about a $2 part.

I have purchased lots of items from the bargain bin and I have never had a problem. It's the first place I look when I go into Cabelas.

bought some AGM batteries there once for 35 each, got three years on the TM with them. Used to find good rods, but not for a while. Sometimes hunting clothes off season.

It's so hit and miss at my closest store. But I've gotten some great deals. I look for items that say discontinued rather than returns. But...

I buy rods with missing/broken guides and fix them for resale. Make a little money on them.

I was in there yesterday just poking around. Nothing really caught my eye except for a falcon lowrider (amistad?). Didn't really have a need for that rod so I passed on it, but was a steal at $113
