Well formula Mateo and I hit yet another north Texas river today. Dropped in to our favorite hole strip strip strip bang fish on! Wild as it is two days of warm this will be world class fly fishing about the best Texas has to offer period. Fish are present up and down the river. They were hunkered down in the holes a bit with the front, but they were very active and feeding. It is also about as minimalist as one can get flyfishing 8#invisix tippet splitshot and size 6 clousers in chartreuse and white that's it. I carry a back pack for snacks and that's it. No stomach pumps,DO meters, thermometers needed. We even had a juvenile bald eagle fly right over us. Seems everyone still thinks it's to early exept a few of us hard cores or runs that are traditionally early. Get out to your favorite stream anywhere in Texas I think now and do a little scouting. I think you might be pleasantly surprised. I do think females are still a few weeks out but loads of fish to be caught

Good post Robert. I suppose we will have to keep scouting the waters until we find a place we CANT catch fish.

So what are the ideal locations to target sandbass? Current, cover, depth? What exactly should I be looking for when I search for locations? PM me if you'd prefer.

Right now all the fish we are finding are in transition. They are probably not where they are going to Spohn yet although Fish will Spohn in the locations we are catching them right now these fish are just now moving up and will keep going. A few females every once in a while or showing up but mostly all males right now. They are probably not where they are going to Spohn yet although Fish will Spohn in the locations we are catching them right now these fish are just now moving up and will keep going. A few females everyone's in a while are showing up but mostly all males right now. I would look for an area that had a series of riffles and deeper Pools the Fish will be hanging out in the deeper pools and look for an Eddy. Eddys swill concentrate the fish they will sit in the area and rest where they don't have to fight current before they move up again. They also hold to sandbars real well. Sandbass are going to eat a fly if you can get it in front of them so weight is the biggest factor. Also mend the line good when fishing an Eddy or the heavier current will drag your fly. These early fish almost always hit on a pause two abrupt short strips and a long pause drives them nuts. I would start closer to the mouth of the lake right now if you can as fish are just starting to come in in numbers.
