All three lakes are about 1-1.5 hours from me and I'm trying to decide which one to try out. Wanting to get on some hybrids or stripers... Unfamiliar with all 3 lakes so the safest lake would be a plus. Any pointers or suggestions help... Thanks..

Hybrid numbers have suffered at Somerville recently due to it being so long since the last stocking. The whitebass, crappie, bass, and catfish numbers and size are better than they have been in a long time though.

When are you planning to go?

I live 1 hour from Somerville and 3.5 hours from Whitney. I make the drive to Whitney several times a year because it is such a great striper fishery! There is also that chance of landing that 20lb+ striper!

Somerville can be hit or miss this time of year...

Somerville is a shallow lake (less than 30' deep). The small fronts we have been getting can change the water temps fairly rapidly and slow the bite. If I was fishing next weekend, I would fish Whitney! The gulls are plentiful on Lake Whitney. I usually launch at the state park or McCown and look for gulls. Even gulls sitting on the water are a great indicator that fish are nearby. SteveStrasemeier fishes Whitney often and posts detailed reports of where he is catching fish. I also follow several of the Whitney guides on Facebook including Patt Small, Clay Yadon, and Big D guide service. These guys run trips several times a week, and usually say how they are catching them (jigs, slabs, or live bait). It doesn't get much better than Lake Whitney for stiper fishing in Texas! Goodluck!
