By foot, does anyone know how close you can get to the dam? I mean in general, not asking about current conditions.

Doesn't look like anyone in the bank fishing section knows the answer to this so I apologize for posting it here.

Not good with distance, so dont hold me to that. Second part alot of people do. More stripers than catfish from what i've seen.

I have been a bunch and fished down river from the bridge. Just never thought about or tried to go towards the dam.

According to Google 511 feet. There is a wire with signs hanging from clearly marking the restricted area. I have fished from a kayak there a few times including this last Monday. It is quite a haul to get the kayak up there but on occasion it can be worth it. And when the flow is good the downstream trip can be a cake walk.

If you are planning on fishing strictly from the bank don't expect much in the way of results and the bank can get crowded even on weekdays. The bank is huge rocks. Wading can be better fishing but treacherous. The rocks are slick and difficult to negotiate.

Snags abound. Bring plenty of tackle

So can you park where the gate is and walk down from there?

You can park up or near the campground bathroom. It is about 300 yards from there to where you will want to fish.

Not very close. Very little of the main pool is outside of the protected line. You can thank the 9-11 hysteria for this.

Watch the weather and go after a rain. The lake is full and they will have to release some water every time it rains. Extra water will most often turn on the fish. If they are not running water you can sometimes catch a few in the pool along the road. Lots of big largemouth in there too.

Keep you lures well of the bottom. That pool is chock full of old fishing line that will hang you up.

good luck.

There is a gate open right now and could go into Thur-Fri. Can you still fish behind the dam if they have a gate open? I was going to head up there without the yak and just walk down to that area. Any advise would be appreciated.

With that gate open the water is flowing at 9,000 CFS. I don't think you can fish below the dam or anywhere eels along the river when its flowing that high. Wait for the flow to drop down to 500 cfs or less, and then go hit it.

You can go all the way to the dam. There's a pipe across the river below the dam main pool and you'll need to get out to get over that unless the water is high enough to float over. Once you get there you'll be limited to the small part of the pool outside the warning cable.
