I have a tackle box that I put all my well worn baits in that need some attention. Every year the box gets bigger and I am to the point now that I would like to either restore them myself or possibly have someone one do it at some point. I realize that the time and effort to do this would exceed the value of a lot of the lures but many of them have been out of production for years so I cant just toss them in the trash and buy another one.

My main question about doing this is do you guys remove the old paint somehow or just paint over it? Some of these baits have very thick gel coat finishes that have cracked and chipped over the years so I am thinking that would have to be removed first.

Just so you know you aren't being ignored. Sometimes you can overpaint, and sometimes you have to strip them. I haven't found an easy way to the latter.

sanding always works but it's time consuming. it will give you the best results. another thing to try to get the bulk of the finish off is throttle body cleaner. yep the automotive stuff. works great but be very careful because it will melt the plastic if you leave it on too long. i usually wipe it on, wait just a minute or two and wipe it off, repeat as needed. then fine sand to get the bait ready for base coat.
i also have a sanding cabinet that i use sometimes to strip baits. requires a delicate touch and close attention.
