I drove out to the Nails creek boat ramp Saturday morning. I saw the guy with the motorized kayak leaving the boat ramp. I decided to try out the kayak cart I built and drag my kayak into Nails. The first test of the kayak cart was a failure. It was pretty much a failure this time too. I have to redesign it to fit my hull properly.

I fished for about an hour in Nails and only caught one catfish. I guess I'll wait until January before I try it again.

PM sent. Let me know your plans.

Sorry, J-Moe. Was away from the internet most of the weekend, busy camping/fishing. My buddy and I fished Yegua out of his go-devil boat on Friday & Saturday. The crappie fishing is really good right now. Caught a lot of undersize, but some really nice ones too. Fished Nails on Sunday from kayaks, and fishing was definitely a little slower, although my buddy caught the biggest fish of the weekend. We only caught one non-crappie, a black bass, all weekend long, and that was in Yegua.

Can anyone tell me how big the new crop of hybrids are currently in the lake?

I caught several in the 15 to 16 inch range in the spillway. I'm not sure if they came up from the Brazos or came from the lake. I did catch a stripper this weekend so I know some fish came up from the Brazos, as usual.

Make sure you are looking at that tongue patch before stringing up fish.

They are the exact size of big white bass on the lake. I caught and released 30-50 one trip. By next fall they should be way too big to be whites.

That's exactly what I saw. Only difference is that first impact when they struck the fly caused serious damage. Fly broke off twice. Leader broke once. Straightened a hook once. And the usual extended fierce fight resulting in a little drag having to be given up.

Man I love catching hybrids on the fly rod. I haven't hung into any of the older crowd lately. But saw some pictures of that group. They seem to be in the 24.5 to 27.5 inch range. 7 to 9 plus pounds.

Wow, I took the first picture on 6/28/17. The second picture on 11/26/17. The growth is incredible in 5 months.

There's still some of those old hybrids up there, but for some reasons they are not schooling on tops like they did last year. And then there's days they will take a bait readily and than there's day they wouldn't care if baits were hitting them in the face. They would just move over and let the bait swim on by. Those small hybrids are like fish on steroids. They are growing at an incredible rate. Pretty soon you will have your fly rods tested to the max. Get ready Jamie!! They are growing fast !!

As for whites. Omg !! Lets just said the past few spawns was very successfull. You creek guys just might have an incredible run this year up them creeks.

Them hybrids the size of big white bass has a very distinct double tooth patch. So no excuse not to see it and retain them as whites. Hope the game warden out there checking, because I think a lot will be mistaking for whites.

Interesting. One of the guys told me when he cleaned a couple of those 24 inch hybrids they didn't have anything in their stomach. Very picky right now for sure.

Hello J! It's been along time. How's it been in Somerville? Has Ben been fishing/posting? Since I moved I mostly fish the run on the trinity, so I thought I'd drop in and say hi!

Hey Ryan, nice to see your post. Been a long time for sure. Crappie fishing in Yegua is decent right now. No White Bass in the creeks yet and probably won't be until we get a good rain or two. What do you fish for in the Trinity? I've fished it above Livingston a few times and caught crappie & whites.

Do the fingerling hybrids have 2 tooth patches like the adults?

Jsinn, it's been two years since I've timed the run just right on the Trinity. Either I can't get time off from work or the rain has messed it up, but I catch whites mostly. I usually go to the lock n dam and walk aways from the crowd. I used to think NB was crowded when we would fish there....this place is nuts! I found some sand bars and holes away from the crowds that usually do well if the conditions are ok. I sure do miss Somerville.
