I went to the dam this afternoon. I was fishing with my 4 weight and a size 10 J-Moe Briminator. I was throwing out the light fly and catching bluegill in the upper part of the water column for a while. Then a started throwing it out and waiting a long time for it to reach bottom. I pulled it across the bottom really really slow and gave it a slight jigging action every once in a while. I started catching drum. I ended up catching close to 30 drum. Then I hooked a fish that I thought was a hybrid. It made a long run and I had to fight it for a long time, being careful not to break off the 6 lb. tippet, before I finally wore it down.

It wasn't a hybrid this time. Instead, it was a 5 lb. 12 ounce carp. I will submit it to establish a Yegua Creek common carp record.

Wife and I, plus another couple fished overlook marina Saturday.

Crappie bite there was just really, really slow.
Most caught were in the 12"-13" range, with my wife's being the biggest at 13-1/2".
Heard about the 2.9lb caught that day.
Tires at big Creek I think.
I'm pretty new to fishing crappie, I overheard a couple people saying the crappie should be coming in close to bank soon, when does this usually happen and for how long?

They should be hanging around shallow til the water gets about 70 degrees. They start spawning around 60. The lake should come up a few feet with all this rain, and the crappie may go right up to the bushes on the bank in certain areas over the next few days. It looks like the yegua will get about as high as it did after the last rain event, so the whites should really get active as the water recedes in the creek towards the weekend or first part of next week.

Is the overlook Marina a official weigh station ?

Looks like the Yegua basin received between 1 to 2 inches from this last front passing through. Should make for enough flow to really get the whitebass moving up for a great weekend of bank fishing the creeks.

Somerville got 3.75 inches. That should be enough to get Nails and Cedar going good too.

Back when I was in school we had a weekly cash tournament at Big Creek. There were several 3#s caught but no one cared about being in a record book- just wanted the cash. Im sure that 2.9 will be broken this year when spawn is full swing.

I went to middle Yegua creek on Friday. First time there.
I've scouted the other creeks (Nails & Cedar) and there were was maybe 1-1/2 foot of water, plus a few pools.
With the rain we got today, yall maybe will have better luck.

Hooklinesinker was right, that place looks like a warzone from all the dead trees and log jams.
I fished the Irwin bridge for a few hours. It was pretty slow. The other folks around said the same thing, but I did see them catch at least 2 white bass.

I myself caught a Yellow catfish, small but I'm very happy as I can now officially say that I've caught every species of Texas freshwater catfish there is.


Hopefully, me and my son will be back out there soon.


PS: While at Irwin bridge, a guy in camo came up asking me if I've seen hogs. He had the TPWD map with him and was trying to make sure where he was. I've pointed to him where we were at. I didn't know the were public hog hunting grounds in Somerville too.

Drove over all branches of the Yegua on Hwy 21 today and everything is completely flooded.

This is all good and necessary for the whitebass run to be the best it can be. A 10 day delay to fish the Yegua is nothing when you consider the number of whitebass that will be caught when we can get back on the creek. The lake is up about 2 foot and that is enough to bridge the gap of shallow water at the mouth of every creek feeding the lake. I look for there to be whitebass up most if not every creek around the lake.

I will suggest that the parts of the Yegua and Nails creek in the WMA is worth exploring if you are looking for less crowded water and fresh fish.
All that is required to fish the WMA is to wear hunter orange vest so the hog hunters can see you are not a hog.

Any updates? Looking to head up there in the next few weeks.
