So, Wednesday morning I'm hopping on a plane to Belize for 8 days. I'll be staying on ambergris caye. This is mostly going to be a diy fishing trip, but we did book a guide as well. Any reccomendations on places to eat, things to see or accessible places to fish for bones? I've been planning this trip for a year now so I'm sure you can imagine these past few days have been the slowest few days of my life. Thanks for any help!

You will really enjoy your stay there...but a word to the wise, keep your personal possessions close, especially if/when you are away from the lodge.

Take plenty of #6 gotchas with various weights from bead chain to heavy eyes weights...the primary colors should have tan and white in them. The water depth will determine which weight to use. I'd also carry some cockroaches and black death for Tarpon and definitely some crab flies for the Permit.

Also, something I personally like to do, which many do not, and that's take a 9 wt with you just in case the wind is up. The bones are generally small, and in fact a 5wt would be entirely adequate except for the wind...and the wind usually blows. A 9wt can be absolutely invaluable.

Eating? Can't help you there...there's fun fishing to be had and you can eat anywhere, LOL.

Have a great trip. You received good advice regarding preparing for the possibility of some wind. Personally, I would take an 8wt and a 10wt - with backups for both in the event you snap a rod. Its also been good practice for me to line up one level (e.g. 11wt line on 10wt reel). That was exactly what I took to both Cuba and Ascension Bay last year and served me very well, regardless of the conditions I faced. We fished for similar species you should see in Belize - bonefish, permit and tarpon. The 10wt came in very handy for the larger tarpon and the wind. Not sure where you are located, but you can contact Tailwaters in Dallas for fly recommendations for Belize. I cant imagine that trip as a diy, but I wish you the best of luck. Thanks for the advice. I'll be taking my 7wt, two 8wts and a 10 wt. I've been planning this trip for about a year now so I've been able to tie up plenty of bonefish flies in every possible size and color. It should be a fun trip, I will definitley be posting plenty of pictures during the week I'm there.
