This year is going to be my first trip to Galveston. Normally I make my fishing trips to the Alabama coast. It took me years to completely figure it out. This year, my job is going to have me in Texas, so to cut down on the drive I'll be in Galveston sometime in June or July. I used to fish the Gulf State pier to catch bull reds, tarpon, and sharks. I mainly targeted the reds though. I'm looking to do the same in Galveston, but I'd be fine with anything that puts up a good fight. I'd appreciate some general advice on locations and general fishing style for those areas (we use live alewives on a steel leader in Alabama). Gear isn't an issue, I've got pier carts and nets, large and small surf rods with heavy braid, and pretty much any tackle needed. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert on Galveston but have a few low hanging fruit areas to get you started in the right direction. As for piers, there are 2 main ones, the Galveston Fishing Pier and the 61st St Pier. Both are in good shape and I'm sure there are plenty of folk out there to tell you "exactly" what to do! Throw out some blue crab for black drum. If you make your way to the far west of the island fishing at San Luis pass is favorite. Also at the state park you can find some good spots and flats for flounder gigging. Be care at San Luis Pass and get some local advice, the current can be brutal and sudden. I see guys with ropes tied to them so they don't wash away! Good luck

Thanks. I realize the local guys probably won't be looking to give up a ton of info to a newcomer. Any info helps.

Theirs a lot of areas to fish in or near Galveston. If you intend to just surf fish and do piers for a while...I'd first visit the areas and eyeball the other fisherman and get a good idea of what they are using. Ask questions. If you wade out in the surf...beware of our undertow here and bottom structure. Their's rock groin areas to fish from in G-town and while your here, visit the Tx City Dike, a nice clean area . It's 5 miles long, drive out there, camp out. Their is 3 bait camps at the base of the Dike...since IKE hit here..everything got washed away. The Dike was built up, added and built new boat ramps...a Pavilion..beach area etc. Who knows, we may bump into ea. other one day. I usually launch the boat from that area. PM me when ya get down here.... Later.Ed

Try seawolf park. There is a nice pier to catch red fish, but gets crowded. Last time o was there I witnessed a guy get hooked in the eye lid by someone not paying attention casting out.
keep it reel

You can catch bulls off the bulkheads in SWP too. But I'd rather fish for them in the surf away from everyone. Mullet should be readily available at that time for reds/sharks.
For some fast action fun, try targeting specks under the lights.

Take a ferry ride and fish Rollover pass and that area. More shell on the bottom and beach. Not usually as crowded.
Also don't forget about the jetties, and there is always Texas City Dike. Boyds One Stop is a cool place to stop/shop before driving onto the dike.
I think you will find the pier fishing disappointing compared to Florida and Alabama or at least that has been my experience.
