I just left the dock behind my house after an hour or so of fishing. It was way too windy for ultralight casting but I had such a presentation on my 6'9" St Croix ultralight rod, and a 1000 series Shimano Ci4+ reel.

And, I still have the Sufix Nanobraid spooled on, no leader. Nanobraid, a true braided line of Dyneema . . . not to be confused with Berkley Nanofil (which I also like just fine). Test? 2 lbs. This test strength Nanobraid is .001" in diameter, so very, very light. No leader needed, at least I don't think so . . . I don't think fish could see this braid.

So, just toward the end of some really windy fishing, I got a nice strike, could tell immediately a bass had jumped aboard in the fading light. I thought at first it was going to spool me as the Shimano has a pretty shallow line spool anyway; but, the bass tuckered out a bit and little by little, I reeled him in. My next door neighbor, Reagan, a high school competitive bass fisherman, lipped him for me at the dock. I didn't want to take a chance and swing it out of the water. We both agreed that it was likely right at or just over one pound.

The rod handled it easily as I knew it would, the reel and the drag worked very well, too . . . but, my concern was whether the 2 lbs. braid could take it. This was a good test.

No worries, it held up just fine.

Anyway, for anyone looking for a super light braid for panfish, hope this report helps!

Brad

Nice report Brad. I am always amazed what is possible with light line. I guess I should say, use to be amazed. Lol. I have landed some fine fish on 2-4lbs line. I recently ordered some 4lbs seaguar tatsu fluorocarbon line. I love light line fishing. I have also recently ordered an Ajing rod from Shimano Japan. Looking for a new light line experience.

psalty, for sure! Grandkids are more interested in landing them, not all of the mechanics and odds whether a line will hold up, or not.

Jeff, I'm having lots of fun with my ultralight tackle. It really broadens out the fishing experience.

I still need to buy a 5 footer and I am eyeing that crappie rod, G-Rod makes as a top candidate.

I've caught several nice bass on your old St. Croix rod. Really nice!

Are you going to fish the Neches in Chandler for white bass in the next month or so??? I've been thinking about that a lot lately, what a nice trip that'd be.

I found some 4lb Berkeley nanofil on sale at academy for 1.99 after Christmas. I tried it out the other day and it's unbreakable. I straightened the hook partially out on a snagged rooster tail. Lure came free and line is fine. It casts a little weird and looks and feels like dental floss, but it's stout.

I did use the recommended knot, by the way.

Yes, Berkley Nanofil comprises fibers all running parallel to each other, not aligned as in traditional braided lines that are woven or "braided."

I like Nanofil, too, and I still see it being used by light tackle enthusiasts. It just never caught on as much at the higher test strengths, and I've never seen much of it on baitcasters.

Update! Yesterday around lunch, I walked down to the dock and I caught another 1 lbs. bass, then a 9 incher or thereabouts. But, my best fight my last catch. I hooked into a fish that took me down almost immediately into the grass. As I pulled it in, I saw that it was a nice bluegill . . . about 8 or 9" in length, probably 4.5 to 5" measured from tummy to back. The bluegill fought better than the 1 pound LMB!

Today, I went down again mid-morning and caught yet another bluegill, this one about an inch longer, a bit heavier, too, than the one yesterday.

Again, so far, no issues with the Sufix Nanobraid 2 lbs. line. I feel as though it will likely be able to catch up to a 2 lbs. bass, maybe even a 3, as long as I set and use the drag properly, then allow the rod to work the fish, don't horse a large fish in.
