Friend of mine has been pulling nice Redbreast and Longear out of creeks and small rivers lately. Pattern seems to be the same. Brush piles and laydowns in current bends. She's been stopping at every bend of rivers and creeks this Winter and if it had some type of brush pile or laydown, she would catch at least a handful of redbreasts and/or longears. She caught them on a drop shot with Gulp Alive and/or a plastic craw. Been tying a double drop shot rig (two hooks separated by a +/- a foot above the weight) when the current carve out was particularly deep and you couldn't see the bottom or pile. Way to go, Chuck! Got an early start on them. Should make finding them this Spring a lot easier.

Thanks Fooshman and Jagg for the replies! Jagg: Your friend is right on the money. I have also been catching some very nice adult Longear this winter. The Longear are hanging around at the ends of currents also. I guess it has not been cold enough for long periods of time to put the fish in deeper pockets of water. It has been about three days of cold weather followed up by five to ten days of warm weather! If the winter stays on the mild side this up coming Rio season should be a GREAT one! Side Note: In the past I have always taken advantage of the warm spells during the winter and it has paid off all the time!

That white rock, big redbreast and clear water are starting to look very familiar to me. Too bad I have to spend my winter sliding down the slick muddy creeks around Somerville. I'm always jealous of you being in the center of the most fertile sunfish fishing in the world. Keep the great posts coming my friend.

Nice fish Chuck. Reckon this warm winter is playing a part in the Redbreast bite?

Thanks Gitter and Clayton for the replies. Gitter. This warm winter has been a active one for sure. All we need now is some rain to charge up the water!

Banker, I noticed in your post near the end of last year, and again this year, that you are using a lot of Gulp Alive Night Crawlers. Before last year, it appeared that you always used live night crawlers. Are you finding that the Berkley crawlers are about as good as live bait, beginning to switch over from live bait to the Gulp?
Second question, do you pinch off and use a section of the Gulp worms like you do a live crawler. I haven't actually seen the Gulp Alive Night Crawlers, but online it looks like they are about six inches long and suitable for bass and walleyes.

I haven't actually seen the Gulp Alive Night Crawlers, but online it looks like they are about six inches long and suitable for bass and walleyes. I usually fish with live night crawlers 95 percent to the time. If there is an aggressive bite going on with a lot fish in the area I will switch to the Gulp Alive worms. I pinch sections off just like I do the live worms. Usually 3 to 4 inches works well! Side Note: This latest warm spell has the sunfish active!

I see. Good to know. Guess there is no substitute for a live worm when they are not aggressive.
