I have 2 gen 1 HDS 7's networked. Looking to move to a system with 2 Garmin echomap units. 73sv at the bow and 93sv at the console. It looks like the only extra piece I need is the User Data Share Cable to allow the units to share waypoints and routes. Can't really find any information on the cable. The picture shows is with three stripped wires and no info on how that connects to the units. Thoughts on the upgrade and info on the cable appreciated.

I'd go with Humminbird Helix G2N units; then you can use Navionics or Lakemaster mapping.

Not sure on the technical info for linking the units, but my opinion on the upgrade would be to just look at all units and see what is best for what you do. If mapping is not as important to you, then I think you will love the Garmin. By me saying that I am not saying that Garmin does not offer good mapping on the lakes they have available, I am simply stating that with Humminbird or Lowrance you have multiple options(Navionics, LakeMaster, etc) with each unit to ensure you get quality mapping on the lakes you fish. All make a great product, but some like features for one that someone else could care less about. http://webapp.navionics.com/#boating

Looks like you need to do is connect two wires between the 2 units.
There's a link there to Garmin support too.

Thanks for the input on the install and the mapping. the Garmin units include lakeVu HD mapping. The information reads that there are 13,000 HD maps and 17,000 overall. I don't have any informaion on how to update LakeVu maps. I use navionics now and have been pleased with the quality.

You do not need a special cable to connect the two units. Just get some marine grade, red and black wire. Connect the blue wire from one unit to the brown on the other, and vice versa. Then make sure data sharing is turned on both units.
The only thing Garmin lets you share by networking is waypoints.

I did the same upgrade 6 months ago. I could kick myself for not doing it sooner. Cheers, George

Thanks Gungle. No issues with the maps? Looks like you can upgrade with a micro sd card when needed.

I made the switch and am happy I did. One thing to note is your waypoints will not transfer via card without having them changed to a different format. I will look for the link and get back to you.

Thanks J-2. I think I read on the Garmin site that they host a site that converts the waypoints. i don't know how involved that process would be.

I have a 73dv and 93sv. I'm pretty happy with my purchase. If mapping is a big deal for you then you can go here to see what lakes Garmin covers. http://lakes.garmin.com/The only gripe that I have are the Garmin maps are not accurate. My home lake Joe Pool is so far off I went around with quickdraw turned on and navionics on my phone to map it myself. I've noticed this on a few other lakes as well. I haven't fished any max def lakes.

Thanks for all the input. The issues with mapping are concerning to me and the link provided by JoeyC shows that some of the East Texas lakes I fish are not as defined as the Navionics Update I currently use. Guess I'm back in the research mode.

I know this is off topic, but is there a map upgrade you can buy that offers better mapping for the lakes in north texas?

I use Navionics upgrade and pay $100 a year for unlimited updates on an existing micro ad card. I am pleased with the details and number of lakes included.
