Double uni for me

Well that is because you and your single buddy are not tying it correctly.

This is a VERY important step. I bet most that "never use a Palomar" or "it always breaks" do not understand.

Oh well...in the end I don't care what someone else uses as a knot. Hell, in all honesty, I HOPE they use something else. Haha.

.....anything to help my odds during a tourney.

Exactly

I keep the lines parallel to each other while tying the overhand knot, then slip the loop over the hook or bait then lightly pull the overhand knot back away from the hook or bait forming a figure 8 or Infinity symbol, pull the main line and the tag end slightly making the knot smaller but still keeping it slightly loose until you get right up to the eyelet, then wet it just to be safe and tighten the knot and the loop. The loop needs to tighten down between the eyelet and the knot. That is the correct way and it will work no matter what line you use.

Most knots will work. I use the Trilene knot because that's the one I'm best at. Never had one break at the knot. Make sure whatever knot you use, pull it wet and slow.

A Palomar is a great knot and it won the 2014 Knot Wars for light lines using all three main line types.

A simple knot, yes, but it has two things going for it: One is that it is based on a doubled line so it has two lines passing through the eye of the hook or terminal tackle. It spreads the load at that critical area. Two is that its loop (formed by the doubling of the line) isn't clipped off as it is in a Double Uni, Double Cinch or Double San Diego Jam. So, it can't slip apart from that end, only from the one tag end it has after it is clipped.

Hey! All of the doubled line knots are great. I'd imagine the strongest of them all is the "Power Knot" since it has everything the Palomar Knot has (two lines through the eye, and the loop anchor keeping it from being able to be pulled apart) but it also has several wraps that create some shock absorption (some criticize the Palomar in this area) and much more friction surface to prevent slippage from the same side a Palomar would have to unravel.

P.S. A Power Knot is actually just a Double Cinch Knot with the loop passed around the hook.

I'm agreeing with Frank that the Palomar is a good fluoro knot? Yes I am. Except on the 'too' (to) part.

Yes, it is a very good knot.

Just a guess on my part, but after the double line is passed through the eye and one's two hands are in position to begin the tying, if you are taking more than 10 or 15 seconds to tie a Palomar, you might be doing something wrong. It could mean you are bogged down somewhere in the tying of the knot, and it gives it more time to foul up, get lines crossed up and so forth.

Crossing lines and uneven barrel wraps reduce the friction available to a knot. Untwisted lines and smooth barrel wraps mean more line to line contact inside the knot, more friction.

The pros and recreational guys who have good luck with it, usually tie it really well, quickly and effortlessly.

KVD uses it as his primary knot last I heard. That is a pretty good endorsement.

James Niggemeyer showed me the Eugene Slip Knot at APT a few years ago. It works well for me.

Erwin knot or the Single San Diego jam. I love the Double Sandy Eggo but it's way too bulky. It's my go to when trolling or jig fishing though.

For those of you having problems, maybe you should revisit how you tie the knot.
