No waders. Even neoprene would fill up quick if (and when) you dump in some of the faster water. Just get some good quick dry convertible pants and you'll be fine.

that looks like paradise! I have never had my kayak on moving water let alone rapids. fair to say I would need some practice before going (not that I would catch anything) or trial by fire?

I second that.
However, if you do go, bring one set of clothes for camp and one to fish in. Don't wear cotton on the river. Protect your feet. Keens are great. Look up "back packing recipes" for dinner for dinner ideas. Prep them at home in a freezer bag. Pour boiling water in them at dinner time. http://www.wildbackpacker.com/backpacking-food/recipes/backpacking-dinner-recipes/ has some good ideas. Eat grab and go food for breakfast and lunch. IE granola bars, apple sauce packet (like the ones for kids), trail mix and beef jerky. Jet Boil stove is nice. Instant coffee. Mesh laundry bag for trash. Don't mess with Texas.

It's okay to eat fish because they don't have any feelings.

Here's a short video of our trip last year. River was up about 7 inches from the previous year so the 30 mile paddle wasn't as treacherous. I don't know what we are going to do with ourselves this year with only 15 miles to go in 4 days. Hopefully, catch a lot more fish.

Devils River 2016

Yes, I learned my lesson of not sticking my feet out on rapids as you'll see at the end. Me being a big guy in a little boat I can control the stability, but everyone from my wife to all my friends say I am crazy....yes, I am. smile

I have a Big Rig now, so no mas sticking feet out. Everyone is happy.

Did my 1st trip last year and already have this year's planned. We took;
Mountain House freeze dried meals which were great. (dinner and breakfast, we snaked for lunch)
2 backpacking stoves for our group of 6. (one for backup)
mini sawyer water filter (the kind that screws right onto a water bottle)
1 man tent (not very much room for anything bigger)
the best sleeping pad you can afford!
some good dry bags
fishing clothes and something dry to sleep in
plenty of rope and straps

There are other things that I'm leaving out but these are some of the important ones that come to mind.
Have fun Bro!

I did the river trip three years ago.LOVED IT>>>

Do you have a need for the three day over night stuff? i will sell mine, i dont plan on ever doing it again due to my leg problems. I have two water tight bags, all the one man supply's with heat fuel all packed up. one man tent, cooking utensils, all kinds of things, some never used at all, we went with 6 men and shared a lot of cooking things.

If you need any advice call me please, there is a lot of information to know. 214-557-9664 Rocky

I watched a movie the other day, on Netflix or Amazon, don't remember which. It's called END OF THE RIVER, about a kid solo canoeing the Pecos River, looks very similar to the Devils River.

Sorry, the movie is actually Rivers End, with Barry Corbin. It's on Amazon.

We had a blast! Great group of guys! Amistad Expeditions was great, wouldn't change that. Fishing was tougher than expected! Only averaged about 10 fish/day each for the six of us.

Items learned for next time:
Spend the money on good dry bags, you WILL get wet.
Put something on your fishing pole that floats, or have a way to put a tether to the boat on it. I didn't lose any rods, but 2 guys on our trip lost/broke both theirs so we had to give them our backups.
Spend the money for fast drying clothing, you are always wet. Good shoes that drain are a must. One guy wore running shoes and was cussing the rocks in his shoes all day.
Bring dry clothes to change into at night, more for comfort than anything.
Sun can beat you up, protect yourself! Only thing I didn't was my ankles and they burned.
Have straps with your sunglasses, one guy tipped and lost them on day one - he had to borrow a backup.
Use the campground and plan on a visit from the TPW - their diligent. We were completely clean but he still tried to make us feel like we were on thin ice.
Take lots of pics and video, it's fun to share!

Video -> Devils River 2017

Went down early and fished around Bakers Crossing for the day and then met up with Amistad for the shuttle to our put in point at mile marker 15. Faced some 60 mph wind gusts with consistent 45 mph winds on the first day. We had to stop at times because we were basically paddling on a treadmill, but other than that smooth paddling down with wonderful weather. Caught over 100 fish between the 4 of us. Caught a Devils River water body record smallie along the way. Missed the length record by 1 inch.

The new designated campsite at mile marker 20 is spacious and grassy with abundant amount of trees. The river was low compared to last year, but still flowing pretty well. Thank you to Amistad Expeditions for another hassle free shuttle to and from the river. Highly recommend them.

Enjoy the video if you have about 20 minutes of spare time.
