I asked my Montana trout guide to give me a list of flys to tie, well he did. I'm a novice fly tier and don't know where to start figuring out a material list. Ii could use some suggestions on where to go to get material lists for specific flies. The websites I've looked at so far have been very confusing. It may be my simple mind.

Look at the site Charlie's Fly Box. He has a lot of recipes and most show how to details also.

Great suggestion. The guy who does the videos for Orvis is Tim Flagler. You can also find his videos on YouTube under Tightline Video. I just started tying in September and YouTube has been a huge help. In addition to his videos, check out In the Riffle. Good luck!

Tightline and In the Riffle are my absolute favorite videos and completely taught me how to tie flies.

Early on I decided that fishing would be my way of looking at the world. First it taught me to look at rivers. Lately is has been teaching me how to look at people, myself included.

Another thing to mention is that if you are near an Orvis store they are doing free fly tying classes each Saturday through March. I took the 101 and 201 classes last spring and it was great as an introduction on how to use the different tools and materials.

I don't have any great advice eon a fly list, other than start with basic stuff that fits where you will fish and what for. Trout flies for spring creeks would be waaaaayyy different than bass in north texas. A bit of googling will probably find you some lists (i.e. "top 10 flies for the rocky mountains"). There are also a few threads on this board if you dig thru the history.

Once you have the name of a fly to tie, head for youtube. I found it way more useful than a website with photos and words and there are a zillion fly tying videos. Some of the youtube channels mentioned above, like Intheriffle, are a good source as they have a bunch of tying videos in one place and are good quality videos.

I definitely recommend trying to start with a few basic flies that share some of the same materials. That will minimize your initial purchases for raw materials, hooks, thread, eyes, etc.

Here's the text from my guide. Last year the jig head prince tied as a dropper was a killer fly.

Hey Chris, this year you will be here during golden stones and salmonflies. A Chubby Chernobyl with a
bright yellow sparkly body in a size 10 is a great choice. The jig head prince that we fished last year was a
#14 with a tungsten bead. Another great choice. A #10 brown Pat's Rubber Legs is another great nymph

Those are three fairly common flies. You should be ablr to find videos on YouTube for all of them. Good luck!
