I'm thinking of trying out those clamp-on swivel seats for my jon boat...the ones that clamp down to the benches. I hear they're bad about slipping off when you're moving at a decent speed. Should I avoid these? Is there a better alternative seat? Or maybe a hack for keeping them still? Any advice is appreciated.

I had a 10 ft jon boat years ago that I put a couple of swivel seat in.... If I remember right, I think I was able to drill some holes into the bench seat & then bolted a short pedestal swivel base for the seat directly ito the bench....I was able to reach under the bench to tighten the nuts by cutting a small opening in the side of the bench. Check out this thread I found to visually see what another guy did that was similar to what I did.. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/20413-how-to-mount-swivel-seats-in-a-jon-boat/

I have a couple of the clamp on seat bases, used them a few times and they seemed to work OK. You can't get too crazy or they can/will slip off the bench seat. But they are far better than having no backrest to lean up against if in the boat for longer periods of time.
I bought them way back when we were going to Caddo a lot and renting Jon Boats. If I owned a similar style boat I would mount something more permanent using rivnuts to avoid having to get under the surface with backing nuts.

When you're talking about getting under the surface with backing nuts, are you referring to installing the clamp, or mounting the swivel itself directly to the bench?

I was speaking of mounting the swivel/base itself to the bench. The clamps on the things I have do not require any drilling or holes.
